The next step, better low range

Post by Ferwoaza »

Alright...I've pulled my finger out and I'm getting the ball rolling with this.

Just scored a Xfer case for $350, picking it up on Saturday.

Then I'll get it over to MRT and we'll see what we can do with the low range. I'm aiming for somewhere between 4:1 and 5:1.

Bit of techy info...

Stock Low Range Ratio = 1.754
Diff Ratio = 5.285
1st Gear Ratio = 3.752

Stock Crawl Ratio = 34.78

With 4:1 low range crawl ratio now = 79.31 and with 5:1 = 99.14

4.5:1 would probably be ideal = around 90:1 and real nice offroad for 31s.

Will keep you posted..this aint going to happen too quick thanks to budget, but it will heppen (nz accent)

Hey Murray, why don't you make a twin transfer set-up. I know there's ample room for a second box....just have modified tailshafts

Imagine the low range you could get :D if you had this new box modified and kept your standard box !! 180:1 :?: Think of the possibilities

G'Day Andy, basically what I'm looking at doing is cutting new gears for the low range to change them from being 1.7:1 to being over 4:1. So basically the new gears will replace the exisiting ones affecting low range only, no change to hi range.

Ferozius...I'm not sure how easy it would be to use dual trannys. Yep there is the space, but it would mean cutting the end off one case and adapting it to the other?

A bit of CUT'n'SHUT

I'm sure there's a few people online that would love to help you out with the welding and modifications........etc.

And that would make one awesomely geared Ferwoaza

With mine, I'll probably (when it can be afforded / the missus lets me have some money) drop a Rockhopper into it. Then maybe some 4.8 diffs. I've thought about the twin setup, but decided it would be alot easier to drop in the Rockhopper, less modifications required.

Yeah sorry guys, haven't had a chance. I know where I can get a xfer case pretty cheap but it looks like I'm going to be moving soon so everything has been put on hold....

Anyone ever talked to Marks adapters? Would be curious to see if you could adapt say a hilux gearbox, xfer etc to the 1.6L...

Won't be doing much with the Ferwoza for at least a few months..

Cool, hopefully they have enough toyota in there for it to not be too hard :)

If an adapter cost under a grand I'd consider it for sure, even stock your getting better low range with a hilux box.

I also wonder how easy a suzuki 1.6L EFI, gearbox and xfercase would go in, wouldn't think there would be any tunnel issues, the zook 1.6L has more power than the Feroza, yet it would keep the RTA and Insurance happy due to no increase in engine size...

Why not to put a second t-case?

Post by Borisovich »

As far as I understand, when utting a second t-case, from Samurai for example.

(some tech
Feroza
Stock High Range = 1
Stock Low Range Ratio = 1.754
Diff Ratio = 5.285
1st Gear Ratio = 3.752
Samirai T-case
High Range ~ 1.4
Low Range ~ 4.1)

You can gain the following:

1)While 2wd High you have 1.4 ratio, because of Summy t-case. It will compensate the tyres up to 33"
2)You can have 2wd Low. (1.7 feroza t-case low while summy's t-case is 2wd high)
3)You can have 4wd with the 1.7 ratio, with 4.1 ratio and with both.

I think that dual transfer is more preferable mostly for the 1) and 2).

This is what I have worked out over time...

No point getting custom gears made for the Feroza, the xfer case is chain driven, so there is simply no way..

Dual xfers would also be a bad idea as there simply isn't the length in the car to accomodate, you'd end up with a mighty short rear drive shaft and some very nasty angles.

Best bet is to try and adapt a different xfer case, such as a vitara or toyota one. This is a $$$ option tho and from what I've seen, the toyota ones would be a right bitch to adapt...

I should have put a vitara 1.6L engine in the rig along with a gearbox and xfer instead of rebuildig my engine last year, would have worked out to be around the same price...

I'd consider a sierra t-case if you aren't going to build it too big (lux diffs big engines etc)

That way you get the high range reduction benefits of rockhoppers as well and can rum say 33's happily :)

You, in theory, could adapt anything to the Feroza gearbox. Just a matter of $$$ as it will be a custom adapter plate to match both gearbox and whatever xfer you try, and possibly reworking the shaft from gearbox to xfer as well....
