TSLs for hilux. Q78s or 36x12.5?

TSLs for hilux. Q78s or 36x12.5?
Im planning on getting some Swamper TSLs for the lux and I did want to try and fit 38x12.5 but it seems the comps in WA will be limiting tyre size to 36.
So what should I go for Q78s which have OD of 35.5" tread width of 9.5" tread depth of 27/32 and are 6 ply
Or 36x12.5 which have OD of 36.3" tread width of 10.5" tread depth of 24/32 and are 8 ply.
Is the extra tread depth of the Q78 significant? or should I just fit the biggest I can and get the 36s?
Or in that size do people reckon there is a better choice of tyres? Simex? Boggers? Claws?
Im pretty keen on TSLs as they seem a good allround hard core tyre.
Paul.

Boggers are good, but swampers are better allround tyre, I've driven my boggers on road a few times, they don't wear that bad, but not kind to the driver, and not very discreet as far as Mr Plod goes. and go 8 ply.
And with 35's they grab the front guards at full flex, but can be fixed by pushing axle forward.

Try not to let your mind wander...It is too
small and fragile to be out by itself.

37" Boggers are the go. I'm on my second set!

I'm a big fan of Q78's. They are a bit smaller than 36's, sure, but they are very sweet all round, and I seem to recall that mine are 6 ply (I ran 15's) and they are awsomely flexible. (Something that can't be said for 'pedes)
They are recommended for a 7" rim, which makes them a nicer fit and less damaging on driveline.
IMHO, they are massively underrated.

After running both Peeds and TSLs i would recommend that you by 35 x 11.5 x 15 Centapeeds to much in their favor great grip in all conditions good wear and tuff as nails also cheaper than swampers.I like my swampers but feel that the peeds were a better mud tyre yes the swampers flex better and are quieter on the road but price dose make a big difference
I run Q78`s on my lux. I choose these because,
1. being just that little bit smaller then the 36`s it is easier on the drive train and even though you will still break shit you`d break a bit more with the 36`s.
2. being that little bit smaller it is also alot easier for the little 2.8 turbo to spin them up when needed. I was surprised at just how much I could do in 4wd high range.
3. they fit under the front gaurds good and you can still get heeps of flex with NO rubbing.
4. the smaller the tyre the cheaper it is to make the suspenion work with them, the bigger the tyre even 1 inch bigger the more $$$$ or work you have to do to get them to fit and work correctly.
5. 6 ply is heeps strong but still soft enough to allow great side wall flex when air down and needed.
With all that said once my lux is going again and I have sold my Q78`s I`m going to either 36`s or 37 boggers depending on the $$$ at the time as I now have the power to turn bigger. I know I`m going to break lots of shit but hay they still make it all

pedes do flex, but you gotta start running them at 15psi or lower, but also depends alot of what vehicle you have. they flex awesome at 7psi though on my SWB Mav

pedes don`t work as well as tsl`s on rocks, in mud they are great and I`d almost go as far as to say better then tsl`s but neither JT1 or 2 or the cent`s work well on the rocks.hottiemonster wrote:pedes do flex, but you gotta start running them at 15psi or lower, but also depends alot of what vehicle you have. they flex awesome at 7psi though on my SWB Mav
Paul I reckon you should think about this a bit more, really is the comp scene big enough to influence the type of tyre you run? If I was building ano0ther rig I would buy a tyre that would suit a) what I want, and b) what suits the type of driving I’m doing.
As you know there is only one comp that is being run to date, with plans for a think 5. If I was to look at how often I wheel I would say about every second weekend (good being single) which equals 26 trips a year. Now your saying you want a tyre that suits 5 trips per year, but isn’t really what you want for the other 21 times you go out?
As for the pede’s vs swampers, I have noticed that the pede’s suck on rocks. Just ask Deano about the last trip to Shane’s house.
Duncan, can you really compare a 35 inch tyre against the 38’s? I’m sure if you had a similar size swamper things would be different.

OK I do plan on running 2 sets of tyres.
MTRs for road and soft off road/sand and TSLs for when I want to have some fun!
Re. fitting 36s shouldnt be too much of a prob as Im moving the diff foward when I SAS it as well as having a few inches of lift.
Re. Power to spin em
I have a mighty 2.8 getting a turbo soon so that combined with dual transfers should be enough (I know you can never have enough
).
Re. Breaking stuff I am going to fit some new longfields and axles and have an 80series front hi pinion with ARB going in. So should have the diff side of things covered as long as I dont go too stupid
Paul.

There is a differance in spinning them to turning them, with low gearing you will only turn them. But in having duals you`ll have the standard low range as well so you should be able to spin them ok most of the time.

Pedes cheeper?
I can buy new Q78 x 16 at $290 a tyre through a retailer at retail prices, no haggling.
AFAIK Pedes are far more expensice here, although i will probably but swampers again reguardless of price, as i like them and i find them to work well here in vic (i have Q78 x 16)
The narrower tyre seems to work well and bite better in mud than compared to the wider, but the pedes do seem to work better in vic mud.
