That way, the original soft ride will be retained, but with more clearance.

No it's not dangerous and yes its feasible but its a waste of time.All you gain is clearance no extra wheel travel and you will still need to replace the shocks with something longer.Last time i checked 1" spacers were about $80 a pair another $100 and you've got yourself a pair of longer springs at any rating you like.

I put 1 and a half inch spacers under my Rangie for more ground clearance. I got my spacers made from 4inch aliminium solid tube just like the ones you can buy after market and had 2inch holes drilled in the front 2 for the shocks. With the front shocks dont bother with tyring to squeeze the shock through the hole just make a braket for the top of the spacer and you have just gained all of your travel back. With the rears I modified the rear shock mounts 3inches so I have more travel and the ground clearance. I lowered all of my brake lines by modifying brakets not getting longer hoses. All of this was done at a very small budget and the results are outstanding. I have a few pics check the link.

This is the sortof travel I am getting with some old Lovells springs and Koni shocks. I am very happy with the result.The shocks are working to their capacity and not bottoming or topping out as I have made spring retainers for the rear springs.

Well there you go, my thoughts have already been put into practice.
Malibu9, I don't quite understand your comments about front shocks, holes and brackets.
Can you describe this more, or have you any more pics (1000 words etc).
I thought of putting spacers at the top of the springs, would this still work?
And the lower rear shock mount looks like RHS. Is that all that is required?
