diff cover plates

Out wheelin' yesterday and punched a hole in the rear diff cover plate on my Zook (with MQ patrol diffs).

I'm planning on building/fabricating a new cover plate. I will cut the original one off as it is not a bolt on job.

Was thinking of 6mm plate. Is this too thick?

Any ideas or feed back would be appreciated.

Cut the cap off another MQ diff and weld it in so then its twice the thickness??

Or cut & shave them like on Critta. I'm sure Mock can post a pic.





Good thing you went to those "stronger" diff ;)

I think thats a great idea, steve....too thick could be prob with expansion/contraction rates of different thicknesses???? cracks could appear in rest of diff/axle housing....and welding can get tricky....
just a theory, have no evidence to support the thought.

shouldnt u heat the diff metal up b4 welding to make it less prone to cracking beside the welds ???? temp chalk is used on boilers before welding where i used to work to stop cracking ?? unsure just a thought :oops:

only prob i can see with having the housing too thick is letting the heat out, but for off road me thinks it should be fine :cool:
