swb patrol Vs Rangie
thinking of trading up my shorty (2" lift and diff locks) for an earlier model (80 - 85) 2 door range rover if i can find a nice enough one with a few more mods.
Partly because i`m sick of changing gears and want an auto and partly because I drove a mates one the other way and was amazed at how much extra vision over the bonnet he has compared to mine.
can anyone out there give me a bit more insight into what else i might find majorly different and put me off the rangi

Rangies have the perfect wheelbase for off road work at 100".
They have style..
Cheap to buy and fix (for the most part)
Dont suffer from rust anywhere near as much as a pootrol.
Not too big and not too small
Other things you will understand once you own one

but unfortunatly i`ve caught the bug and want something a bit more capable than what i`ve got.
SweeeeT sounds like another rangie man to me!
Rangies offer bang for buck....literally bang. There diffs and axles are weak as sh1t. I just finished putting GQ patrol diffs in my RR, mind you there are other ways of making them stronger by getting aftermarket bolt in parts.
RR are better length, alloy, comfy as all hell, heaps better viewing position, better suspension design in the rear. and look better

by putting the patrol diffs in did you also transfer the dreaded gq 'wobble' into the rangie? this is the only thing i hate about patrols .

which dreaded GQ wobble is that??
I had a very tight and good steering vehicle when I first fitted the diffs, but then all the radius arm bush's (that were cracked when I fitted them) finally ripped totally and I got a front wobble if i hit big bumps. I am fitting new front bush's (rubber ones, OE) that will fix this problem

Hi I owned a MQ 3.3 diesel for 6 odd years and yes as a sherman tank in the recovery game it was great. My vehicles spend time recovering race trucks from our mud racing venue in Darwin. It served a very hard life. I still did two gearboxes though and many bearings. It was rough uncomfortable poor brakes no pip or stick under the bonnet and very hot. Did I mention Noisy.
The new machine a 2 door 76 now rebirthed wears the same 35" M/T and 2" cab lift. What a difference. I look well over everyone, it's soooo comfortable. Articulation without mods and with great low range factory gearing you have power to pull that sherman. I still havent got that A/C going yet but not far away. I now have to watch for speed cameras as you cruise casually and quietly along.. Same weight as a MQ but 40 plus KW's more. Good brakes. Don't waste time find a straight one maybe suffering mech failure and find a bent one with top notch mech. Never have to many spares and very cost effective.
Enjoy.

If in dobt just smile, it won't change what is broken but it will make it feel a whole lot better.
