GQ4.2 runs to cold
GQ4.2 runs to cold
any info on why a aftermarket switzer turbo 4.2 would run cold.
It usually runs at about the lower end of the temp gauge.
It didnt allways run this way it was usually at the half way mark but since fitting a heat exchanger for a shower it has dramatically droped it

remove it and try again... see if it goes back to normal

If removing the heat exchanger doesn't fix it then you may need a new thermostat.
Re: GQ4.2 runs to cold
Are you going off the temp gauge, or a physical thermometer in the top of the radiator?
temp gauges do shit themselves

Doesn't the hot shower heat exchanger plumb into the heater hoses??
If so maybe the heat exchanger is disapating the heat out the heater hoses which would lead to lower operating temperatures.
I used to run the heater at full noise in my old car, it was the only way to stop the POS from overheating in slow traffic.

Check that the cooling system has been bled properly also after installing the heat exchanger. I personally havent had a sender go faulty yet, i have had problems with the wiring associated with the sender--this caused fluctuating readings on the guage. The wiring is fairly exposed at the front of the engine and also is exposed to high radiated heat from the exhaust manifold. And yes, fit a new thermostat--76deg opening is the type available from Nissan.

Well strewwth i didnt consider that one it just might do that .Ill for shore put that one on the list.
with the wiring it was partly re wired because it was a 2.8t but as they all do it got hot and was under powered so i swaped everything to the 4.2T but now its running cold (from one extreme to the other)
Gauge state is just on cold Towing a camper up long high hills she moves obout 3 mm on the gauge

jaycar sell a digital temp gauge that goes up to 150 degrees c. you can dash mount them too. they have an adjustable low and hot alarm too. it costs $40

Well when the motor was changed and it was all wired up from the sparky it all run fine.About half on the gauge.
Today i fiddled a bit, replaced heater hoses thermostate flushed radiator (including fins in case of dirt) new coolant and removed heat exchanger ! And guess what ? No change So i was exploring the possability of fitting a VDO 52mm gauge but from what i am told they require some special sender unit cause the nissan one wont work but the special sender is not available for this engine. So imight explore the Jcar one that bru21 mentioned so bru21 any info as to how it hooks up and also how you dash mount it (in the cluster or above) would be great if you could post it here (maybe anyone else with a dodgy gauge might be interested) cheers people

Interesting that it isnt available for this engine, I have a dashpod with 3 VDO Gauges setup in it. Boost, EGT and Temp. The OEM sender doesnt work accurately with the VDO. But have worked out on mine when right is right, and its all in the dashpod now it aint comin out.
Yeah i was told that i might be able to adapt the standed temp probe but it might not work properly.
I will try the thermometer trick cause all i need to do is find out what temp she is really running then i know the gauge is toast.
Still keen on this jcar one that bru21 was talking about
Cheers guys

I just replaced the sender probe in the thermo housing and the gauge is reading just below half on the freeway and climbes to half when giving her a hard time.
You still have the old sender? Im tryin to find out what thread it is, so I can chase up with VDO for a sender...
