no way mate the only way to change a 4 speed 2.2 to a 5 speed is to get the 5 speed box off a 83 hiace and change the inners there is no posable way that i know you can change it that easy the method above works and i will do it as soon as i can find a 5 speed 83 hiace very few around but it is very possable that way. all i can say is i hope you did get r@ped paying for the 2.4 box.

The late box is an easy swap you will need the late front tailshaft and then you will need to move your gearbox crossmember back on the chassie about 100mm and shorten the rear shaft. Other than that it will bolt right up. You may need to replace the clutch to suit the 5sp but i am pretty sure they are the same. The gearsticks even come out in the right place.
The hiace box is a piece of crap that is prone to failure.

im with ruff, its do-able but costs a few bucks in shafts and moving your crossmember, easy enough, heaps easier than doing a cruiser!

Mike
it may be an option that u havent yet xplored , its a supra box there not that xpensive $350+ but u do have to buy a conversion kit $700 +, get your shafts redone and move xmember and finally cut a hole in floor for the shifter ,but well worth it.
There 25% stronger than standard boxs and come in three different gear ratios and bear in mind that they put em behind 350 chevs so they a pretty tough.

So for $1050 you end up with the identical box as if you bought a Hilux W56 for $500 complete with Tcase and shifters.

I am surpirsed that the 2.4 and 2.2 have different bolt patterns etc, they are the same engine family (L, 2L). you guys who say it won't fit, *why* doesn't it fit?

Nobody said they were different bolt patterns. They are not. And Scott '83lux was only going on what some other jackass told him

have had the 5speed in for 2 weeks now. A few headaches getting the box in but what difference it has made so much smoother & quieter just need to tidy up the new crossmember mounts to get it certifed

He just unbolted the 4 spd and bolted the 5spd in and then made some new brackets on the chassie to hold the X-member. Then had the rear tailshaft shortened.

The box bolted up without to much trouble. gear sticks even come up in original position; only 1 bellhousing bolt doesn't line up. you need to move the crossmember back about 140mm & shorten the rear driveshaft & use the yoke from the later model driveshaft as the bolt pattern on the gearbox flange is different. you need to use the front driveshaft from a LN65 with the front yoke from your old front shaft you'll also need a speedo cable from a LN65 as your's will be to short you'll also need a slave cylinder from a LN65 as the bolt holes won't line up with the ones on the new bellhousing { you may be able to drill these out to fit } You'll need to do body lift first because the 5speed is a bigger box & hits the top of the transmission tunnel. If theres anything else you want to know PM me
