heat wrap

has anyone had any experience with exhaust wrapping tape. I'm wondering how good it is at suppressing heat. I have just installed a 2.5" exhaust system on my petty hilux and at one point it goes mighty close to the floorpan (about 10mm), so obviously i want to suppress some heat at that spot.

its good a keeping the heat of your feet but if its a fibre wrap they rust the shit outta ur exhaust pipe. mate had it on his 383 headers and as we all know heat + moisture = RUST !!!!!!

very effective on my 260Z but screwed the extractors eventually
it is used on race cars who expect to replace the extractors regularly

a more expensive option is to get them ceramic coated but they will last a lot longer

also think of fabricating heat shields with a reflective heat proof coating

be careful of very hot exhaust components underneath, they should be shielded to prevent grass fires (and then vehicle fire)

i dont really know what this wrap is, but could you stick it to the cab instead of the exhaust. no idea if this is even possible to do, but just an idea.........

Header companies won't cover their products under warranty if heat tape is used.... Why not use heat shields like most new cars come out with? I know my Mondeo has got a few aluminium ones under the floor pan where the exhaust runs close to the body.

heatshields would be the go but it is a pretty tight spot. Any idea where i can get ceramic coating done its only on part of the exhaust total probably 600mm bolt out section.

I might need to massage the cab a bit with a sledgy for a bit more clearance methinks.

Reason its tight is that i have gone over the centre crossmember between it and the body as at this point i have crushed my exhaust before.

There are other companies doing ceramic coatings, maybe check with a good exhaust shop.

They dont reccommend wrapping headers as they get too hot and buckle/crack/rust. The tape is also used to keep the first part of the exhaust warm so the air inside does not cool down, get denser, and slow down the flow. My father used to use it on his race car for the first 2-3 feet. You will only need about 15-20mm for an effective heat shield - are you that tight for clearance ?

The exhaust (2 1/2 inch) on my hilux runs from the turbo down between the gearbox cross member and the floor, and it doesn't get really hot, I can't feel any heat through the floor anyway...

aftrer it getts wet and muddy, it detirerates and falls off
and that was on a 1ltr suzuk
stoped the heat while it was on there though
