R151 30% OD

Post by toyrex »

Is or could there be any interest in 30% overdrive replacement gears for the R151 or 37% replacment gears for the R150
The cost depends on how many gear sets I order at a time

How much are they ?
Very interested, I am hunting for a set ( was trying to get the Dyna truck box to swap them over)
A V8 is making its way into my truck and the 30% overdrive would be perfect.
Cheers

what is the ratio/toothcount on the new gearset you are proposing? I am not saying it can't be done, and I think a higher overdrive would be useful, but 30% is a big jump and I would have serious concerns about 2 things - first the %rpm change between 4th and 5th gear - on most engines you will drop the engine well below useful rpm range by shifting up except under highway conditions (which to make it useful will require pretty high revs in 4th gear), and second I would be worried about the strength of the gear set - the output (manishaft) gear for such a gearset will be tiny! assuming the factory overdrive in these gearboxes is around 15 - 17%, aiming for something around 22 - 24% is more sensible. To make the mods to a gearbox that is marginal strength for V8 conversions also seems to be a waste - would be better if you could do it to H150/151F (80 series) gearboxes, but with 5th gear in those babies buried in the middle of the box, would require a whole new laygear.

anyway am interested in the numbers if you've got them.

cheers
