This maybe a dumb couple of questions but...

To lower the gearing in a transfer case, which gears (cogs) need to be increased and/or decreased?

Approximatley, how much does the addition or reduction of each tooth effect the finial ratio?

I cannot buy "off the shelf" for my 4b but I might be able to get the cogs made (depending on price to cut the teeth once the rest has been machined up). The t'fer is chain driven. Just susing out things.

Its been said before, you sound like you want to do more than your car is designed for.

Wouldnt it be better to buy something you can do more serious offroad work with, that has accessories available for it?

Yep, I should but... I'm "tinkering" with what I have. :D I know I will never be able to go hardcore with the raider, just not designed for it. If I could find a dirt cheap project base, I would "tinker" with that but I always seem to be in the wrong place or wrong time for the $400-$500 specials that would be a good base. So.............

how much do you expect custom gear sets to cost ? they will set you back way more than just $500

you'll prolly need to buy a 2nd case for now to pull down examine work out whats going on inside , then work out what gears need to be modded , design em in some sorta cad prog , pay big $$ for a place to mill em down and cut the gears, then test find it needs a re design , test again

if it was cheap n easy everyone would be doing it....

you're looking at an easy five figure bill (which could vary from ten to fitty grand easily) to get a working prototype in a vehicle. the process involves pulling a tranfer case apart, carefully measuring the available clearances to see what sort of diameter gears will fit with zero or minor clearancing of the case, and working with those diameters to make a set of gears to lower the ratio. it might be that you'll get to that stage and find there's only room in there for a 20% ratio increase, which is never going to be worth it. then you have to get the gears made, which is not a simple process - they aren't "just" gears but at least some of them will have integral clutches or be compound gears that require special techniques and equipment to build. once you get them built, they have to go in the gearbox for a try, and you find that one gear is just 1mm bigger than it needed to be to fit - damn shame, back to the drawing board, EVERY gear has to change to accommodate that 1mm alteration.

if you're dead keen on keeping the raider, ditch the engine, gearbox, diffs etc and swap it all for hilux gear. then you can get dual transfers and/or crawler gears, and a million diff ratios and it's all cheap as chips compared to going custom. if you can weld you could probably get a hilux motor with dual transfers in there for around five grand.
