td4.2 GQ oil usage

Post by mauricem »

Question about a 4.2 diesel (no turbo) lwb GQ with about 270k on the clock. Uses about 1.5-2 ltrs of oil between 5000klm oil changes. Driving is mainly highway at about 100km p/h.

Is this within a normal range or idicative of wear? Doesnt blow any smoke or fume afaik. As I understood it the 4.2 should do 500,000 k + before getting tired.

thanks

Maurice

mine does similar, but still goes well,

put a turbo on even though it lost that much oil as compression was still ok. done 330,000kms and runs better now than ever before with turbo (put on at 275,000km)

just make sure you change oil often and dont let it get too low.

Mines done over 450k's now, I am running 35" tyres and it uses a little oil as the oil changes get closer. You may want to check the oil you're using, when mine was getting serviced I think they were putting the wrong oil in it there for a while as it went through a period of chewing thru oil, and I thought she's on the way out. But I mentioned it to them and they were checking what oil they were running in it and now it hardly uses any oil anymore, and I give it a hiding.

Should still be plenty of life left at only 270,000km's When i re-built mine at 550,000 it was using no oil between changes but getting noisy. After pulling it down, it would easily have gone much further. Yours may have glazed bores from running too cold/wrong grade of oil.

what sort of oil? I found mine varied with different oils. Found one that doesnt use much, so now I stick to it.

I use SHeel Helix for the 5000k change over, and every 10,000 goes to shop where penrite is used.

Mine uses between .5-1 liter between oil changes with 350,000ks on the clock. My injectors need doing so Im putting the consumption down to that. Quality of oil helps.
Don't ask me, ask them. I'm just runnin for my life myself.
Well they are all following you...
No they ain't, I'm just in front...............
