3.5 heads Vs P76 heads

Post by GURU »

G'day all,

due to afew reasons, including not enough info about drilling oil hole (e.g depth and angle) and not liking the fact the rocker arms have to be shimed (and no idea how much)I'm thinking of just fitting the original P76 heads. whats the disadvantage? I was thinking of drilling the mounting holes for the alternator, pwr steer and Ac and tapping them myself so that wouldn't be an issue.

thoughts please

AFAIK the main issue is mounting accessories. I seem to recall something about breaking rocker arms though. You may be able to use holden or chevy arms and posts.

P76 heads are the same internally as early Range Rover heads. They have smaller inlet valves than the Rangie heads after 1976???
So you may lose a bit up high.
The P76 engine was designed for a still born Rover competitor to Jaguar in the early 70s. When Jaguar and Rover joined Jaguar killed the V8.

If thats the case i think I'll save myself alot of trouble and just drill new mounting holes and tap threads and just use the P76 heads

my RR is 84 so I will measure the inlet valve sizes and see, but really its a daily driver and the extra pwr of the 4.4 over the 3.5 will be enough surely

Hi DAS
McNaughton Engine Reconditioning at Wallsend near Newcastle.au will do the drilling for you if you choose to go down that road.
If I remember he charged me $40 per head to do it. He knows the P76 well as he builds hill climb race engines out of them. I used post 86 heads to get the bigger valves and a mild cam. You can to use the RR push rods as they have oil holes drilled down the centre for addtional lubrication via the lifters, cant remember what rockers to use though.
If I remember correctly the blokes name is Darren Mcnaughton and his phone number is: 02 49501640
address: 18 council road Wallsend .

Just remembered that the RR heads have extra head bolt holes and I had the block drilled and tappet at the same time as I got the heads done..
If I remember they are 7/16 UNC.

You do not have to use the outer head bolt holes. Leave em out. I just did exactly that when refitting my 3.9 heads.
Range Rover deleted them in about 1994, as they caused the head to be jacked up on the inlet side causing leaks into the valley.
