Unfortunatly he will probably have to spend a bit more than 5 grand to get 35's under an XJ unless he wants to do lots of cutting.

To fit 35's you need at least 5-6 inches of lift, and it all has to be suspension lift coz of the monocoque chassis. So that about 3-4000 if you do it with a full kit. Then you need a slip yoke eliminator with any more than 3 inches of lift so another 1500-2000. So your 5 grand is gone already, then if you want to run airlockers with the new diff ratios you are looking at about 4000 for lockers and ratios installed. Then you gotta buy tyres and wheels and flares and and and and.

An XJ is a really capable rig but it costs a lot to build up to be a big truck. Thats why there are less than 5 XJ's in Aus running 35's plus.

bagsy, heres a pic of mine, ALOT more than $5000 to do this.
Your mate can pm my if he wants figures.
96 cherokee
6.5 inches lift (rubicon express)
4.56 ratios
f & r air lockers
35" MT/Rs on 15 x 8 rockcrawlers

just to give you an idea, got my mate in QLD JimmyB, same most things, but has the long arm kit and had his axels done as well.
Otherwise, Mark Hickey, owner of Suburban 4x4, his is even bigger but still off the road at the moment.

shane, even to run 33s he will need at least 5 inches of lift, sye , and some body trimming.
I suppose he could run 33s for a small amount of time with out doing his ratios, but his gearing will absolutly suck.
If he wants to go big, tell him to wait and save up a bit and get it done at the same time.
I have been through 4 different lifts to get to what i have now. Probably wasted about 2 - 3 grand.

Remember you can;t body lift at all coz of the monocoque chassis. All lift has to be in suspension. Thats why its relatively expensive to get even 33's on a XJ.

remembering of course that an Xj is pretty damm capable straight out of the box..

Story i've heard is that an XJ on 31s has more clearance than a GQ on 33s (don't know how true that is, but considering how well tucked and shorter wheelbase, i can see that it could be possible)

Yeah, XJ's on 31's can get you pretty far! I have lockers and gears and about 3.5 inch lift on 31's and can get myself well and truly stuck in some crazy places if I try hard!!

My advice is think what you want to get to, and go straight there... little steps just cost more money... every inch of lift helps. The biggest prob with mine is lack of lift. but lift means SYE and that is a MUST.

Yep, I currently have about 2.5-3" of lift and that can be done quite cheap. Now I'm going to 4-5" and thats going to cost a fair bit more. The SYE is the biggest killer though, Oh and the new tyres, longer coils, modified leaf pack, long travel shocks etc etc etc ;)

Cheers

What amount of lift is needed to get 32" under a cherokee 2001.
What set up is the most widely used is the OME cheaper than the Rubicon or SKyjacker

Jump on AJOR and have a look at some of the News Articles, some infor on XJ's in there. Also try xjdb.com lot of good inspiration there.

Apparantly my XJ is in the gold edition of 4wdmonthly out shortly, have a flick and see whats wot.

If I was to build one again, which I will do in a few years after I finish current project, it will be done a lot differently to how the last one was done.

Last XJ had
35x13.5 Claws no Rockcrawler beadlocks
5.5" RE coils and leaves
1.5" blocks in front
extended RE shackles in rear
procomp shocks
modded rear shock mounts
4.56 ratios
arb lockers F & R
Warn full float conversion F & R
Claytons long arm front
SYE and HD Spicer shaft
Custom rear diff truss
jbitz rear carrier
rock rails
TJ flares with extensive trimming
rear quarts removed
4 pt cage
arb pre 97 bar

and no chance of 5k.............33's and stock axles are a bad thing, even worse is 33's and no ratios. will kill the auto box if pushed hard.

Even not pushed, it can be hard on the auto box - especially with lots of hwy driving they can start hunting for gears WAY too often......
