Welding steel wheelz?

Post by beebee »

What would be the procedure for welding steel sunrasia wheels? I've been inspired by POS's custom offset wheels and am thinking of doing the same. I shall also be after matching beadlocks so I'll be welding these also. These wheels will be for offroad use only and as such they will not be balanced. I have a stick welder but no mig. What type of rods should I be using? Prob 3.2mm?

I weld mine with the mig so probably can't help. As long as they are steel wheels and the surface is clean and you can weld you will not get any probs. Just make sure you set up a jig which is square and solid. I usually tack them in place and run them on a balancer to make sure I am in the ball park then finish off the job.

Here are my buggy ones .. front were Patrol rims I blew the centre out of as they didn't want to sell me 6" bands unless I bought a pallet of 40. The rears were just ROH bands which were $40 each from memory

I did a set of sunrasia, growned the origanl welds out knock the centre out ,turned it over and knocked it back in the other side. outer bead becomes inner & Inner bead becomes the outer bead. Measure the distance from the rim edge to the face that bolts the wheel on . so all wheels are the same. If a wheel balacer is not available bolt rim on to front hub and spin the rim. Measure from rim edge to a constant point ie: shock absorber and measure the run out as the rim is spun. The rim can now be taped true . When rim runs away from shock or constant point tap rim in. Work around the rim until it is true.Once true remove from vehicle
and tack weld in place.Approx 4 points around rim. After tacked recheck rims running true, them weld rim with same amount of welds as it origonally had.
Hope this helps.
By turnning the rim around you are putting the saftey bead on the out side. Safety bead is approx 3-4 times longer the the other side,This takes alot more pressure to pop and therefore hods the tyre on at low pressure better than in its original possition.
I have run tryes on me 4Runner at 6psi with no problems.
