In a pickle again

Post by Shark »

Hey guys not sure wether this belongs in another section but seeing as its about a nissan i thought i would ask you guys first.

Had a week off from work and thought i would take my car to my father inlaws and get some of the rust removed. However once we started we saw that someone had been there before and there was a lot more hidden rust around the place. Infact the gutters on the drivers side had heaps of rust . Alot of this had started when the windscreen rubber had cracked and let water it.

So i made a quick decsion to patch it up and sell it. Now everycar that i have ever owned has cost me an absolute motza and i lose so many $1000's of dollars when i sell and im now not sure wether i should sell it.
For starters i think i overpayed when i bought it 10 months ago for $5000. Its a 1982 LWB MQ Patrol with basically not extra's at all but it had only 154k on the clock. Since then i have spent about $3000 on all types of stuff.

Bullbar, 4 spotlights, massive redarc 24v to 12v reducer and new batteries, awesome tint with graphics, mud tyres, waterpump and new radiator, extractors and exhaust system, snorkel, windscreen rubber, new front seats, endless air type compressor with air tank, body lift ETC

So as you can see there is a fair ammount of work done and im not sure wether it would be worth selling. I know most of you guys are over east and i can tell you now that they do sell for more over here but i do think that if i got $5500 or $6000 i would be lucky.

So that leaves the question what do i do?? I dont really wanna get rid of her but i also dont wanna see it rust to pieces and lose all the money i paid out in the original purchase.

have you fixed all the rust properly? If so keep it.

most of the accessories you fitted you can remove and put onto another truck, so dont stress.

The rust has already been " fixed " but NOT properly. We kinda did a bodge job after we saw how much rust was in it. So all we did was bash the rust in and fill it with 4 to 5 coats of bog and then another 4 to 5 coast of primer. Now waiting for my brother to paint it.

Well even though its a sh*$ job underneath it looks pretty good on top and it would take someone who really knows their stuff to pick it. Me father inlaw has been panel beating etc for the best part of 35 years. I guess i could always leave it until it starts to come back again and then do it again properly

I agree with tiny. Since you havent painted it yet, fix it properly. if hes the panelbeater of the last Eon, he should have no issues shaping some metal to tack in place.

And if you leavit to rust again the job will be harder to fix and will s**t you more..do the job properly the firt time around and then it wont come back to haunt you I have done makeshift jobs before, and they just end up pissing me off and cost more in the end

Yeah i spose i could but i will still paint it and next time will do it properly. Its hard when you dont have ur own tools and not enough time. And yes we were gonna do it properly but when i saw all the rust i got a bit disheartened and said bodge it and i will sell it.

Oh well u make mistakes and next time i will buy a welder and do it properly.

its the old saying that applies here.....

DO IT ONCE AND DO IT RIGHT !

there will be more heartache to follow as you discover more "hidden rust" but in fixing it properly you KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE !.....

selling it or trading it in on another rig is stupid.....how much rust will the new rig have in comparision....

thats the spirit i agree

whats to say u dont pick up another mq/mk with similar problems that age of car is always bound to have rust.

i reckon just fix it and be done with it.. the money u loose in transferring i.e. 1000 to 2000 spend fixing it up aint going to cost much if your father inlaw is a ex panel beater.

Dude next time there will be MORE rust to hack and bodge up... Since you havent painted it yet, why waste the effort, just dig out the bog, and do it right this time, it will take you 1-3 days extra to do it correctly.
