auto hub problems
Hi eveyone,
I own a 97 Frontera sport, and in recent times i have been having troubles with my auto hubs.
There are serious micanical noises coming from the front end. Once the auto hubs have locked in they continue to make loud bangs every few feet, more noticible in 1st and 2nd low range.
Are the hubs stufed?
If this is the case can i fit manual locking hubs from MU or Rodeo to my Frontera Sport?. I
any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
thanks, Matt

All Isuzu manual hubs are apparently interchangable across model. You may want to think about changing over to the manuals either way. It shouldnt be too expensive to pick up a set of Aisins from the wreckers.

I'd also be checking the oil in the front diff, to see if there are metal peices in there.
Mine made the same noise and it ended up being the spider gears in the diff.... if that's what happened do what I did and install a locker.

frontymatt.. i have a 95 frontera sports with auto's and they do make a heap of bangs but i am trying to get maunals , becuase every time you go in to reverse off road even if you are in 4wd they will unlock.. i get stuck on the beach every time.. The front hubs are the same as the TF rodeo as i have been told... Post some pics of your beast me wanna see!!!!
Hey frontie,
yeh sometimes it feels like the hubs silp and then re engage causing some nocks and bangs, always done it abit , but has become worse over time.
The other week at Stockton it was doing it every three meters, became almost un driveable!
TF rodeo you say, ill look in to it.
Got some pics 4 you.

the knock in your hubs is a common problem in these cars the is a circlips inside the hubs that hold the cv's in i have come across this coming loose causing a knock when the hubs are locked.... the engagement of the hubs is control by a vacumm solenoid on the pass side on the fire wall make sure this is all ok the actuator is mounted on the pass side of the diff housing too.
Just thought I'd throw a pic in or two

Your best bet for a lift is to get custom coils,
Most aftermarket coils made for the car only get a lift from the increase spring rate over standard coils.
I bought Carrols coils which gave me 30mm lift,
now have OMEs which gave 40mm over standed hight.
When you compare the standard coils to the aftermaket ones they both measure the same hight ,Its only when they have the load of the car on them do the aftermaket ones give lift.
so i would recomend if you want a noticable increase get custom made ones.
when i looked in to this i was going to get 'Dobbison' ( i think that how you say it???) custom made coils. Around 2.5 inch over standard hight. and mathch them to long travel ProComp shocks. and then sway bar disconectors.
speek to a custom 4WD specialist about it ....they should be able to help out.
Cheers,Matt

Yer, i all ready got 35mm lift from a set of King Springs heavy duty and yer i noticed that they were the same high..... When i was looking in to coils all i could get around NEwcastle was the King's for $120 a set and customs around $350 so you can see why i get the king's...and i got a set of Cross Country 41mm bore foam cell 2inch long travel shocks.. and i will be making a quick discon front sway bar in my holis and taking the rear one out... thanks for the extra info....
