Problem has been "fixed" but stick to the 4.2 there is so much in the way of tech support and it'll last a hell of a lot longer.

It also depends on how long you want to keep the truck, budget and if you tow. The 3L's are very cheap compared to the 4.2 but once you have a look at the power curves from both you can understand why so many 3's kill their gearboxes when used for heavy towing

If you getting a new truck through work, why not 4.8 petrol.
If you nervous about fuel consumption, convert to gas.It would be cheaper to run than any diesel.

If it has to be diesel and you not going to keep it to long, there is nothing wrong with 3.0 tdi

like alot of people said depends what your going to use it for.

if u need a ute u cant go passed a 4.2

or if u want a run around maybe the 3L just dont go venturing to far away from a nissan dealership should everything shit itself.

or for that matter not fussed on fuel go the 4.8

personally i prefer the 4.2 but everyones each to there own my 4,2 with simple mods would blow a 3L away

If your work pays for the fuel get the 4.8. Hard to beat those output fugures.

Having owned 7 Patrols over the years ranging from P40s to RD28s to SD33s to TD & TB42s and now a ZD30 I have no reservation in saying that the 3.0 is the most enjoyable to drive out of the whole lot. I have clocked up 160,000kms during the past 18 months and have towed a 22" caravan around Oz and twice to the Cape with the 3.0. Not once has it let me down and fuel economy at 16l/100km towing is excellent considering a gross weight of 4.5 tonnes. The TD-6 is OK but very much outdated and very slow and noisy by comparison. As stated by various writers in 4x4 Australia the TD42 makes an excellent boat anchor due to it's size and weight. I have owned two TD-6s and both required 5th gear to be replaced, the first at 130,000 and the second at 105,000. They are also very thirsty at around 16l/100km empty. The 3.0 performs and revs like a petrol engine and I have not had a problem with the gearbox or anything else for that matter and don't expect to. Fuel economy empty never exceeds 12.5l/100km. Working in the mining industry I clock up alot of high speed long distances on very rough roads and travel on average 150,000km pa. From experience save yourself 10 grand and buy the 3.0. I know of many 3.0 GUs untouched at 250,000+ kms. Bring on the ZD46 Nissan.

The 5th gear problem has been fixed.
I get 13lt/100kms loaded for a week long trip running 35" tyres. I don't think thats too bad......

I brought the new 4.2TD and around town i am getting around the 14L/100km mark now, at first it chewed a bit of juice for the first tank being brand new i took it as just running in plus i was on highway speeds doing a bit of long distance driving with the A/c hammering.

but i will find out if it is still good as doing same trip this weekend and it looks like its gonna be a scorcher again 44degC

Look honestly the only thing that lets the 3.0l down is its off the line torque which can be cured a little with a dtronic which still puts 8500 back in your pocket.

It does not fix it though, so you must assess what your use is. The 3.0l is a great long rang touring truck, it uses less fuel for more power. Yes you can bomb a 4.2 but if you still expect 500,00km out it then I would be very impressed.

Putting the after market turbo mods on it would be as far as I would go but hell that means more money and a dtronic on a 3.0l gets you 410nm of torque any way.

That said if you climbing hills and like really going hard in the rocks I would probably er on the 4.2l just for that off idle torque helps with the poor stock low range. You could stick some marks gears in the 3.0l and I haven't driven one with them fitted but I would assume the low range issue is over, but that gearing might not suit your offroad touring use on the fltter stuff.

I think people over state the complexity of the ZD30 it is basically and electronically controlled twin overhead cam turboed donk, Not unlike any new petrol model out there.

I haven't heard a spate of problems with any particular Make or Model in the newer 4WD range of engine options so the too technical for the bush tripe rolled out is a bit dinosaurish.

Most people have problems with their 4wd because they put it where it aint supposed to go like under the water LOL.

If you intended to run up too 285/75 the 3.0l will push em fine on and off road just with the all ready mentioned short comings. I run a Dtronic though.

To most people I will just say this go and drive them and let yourself decide. Of course taking into consideration what has been said here.

I mean if I was livin in Vic and did not intend to tour I would go a 4.8 and gas it. If I intend to tour the 4.8 is pointless in the desert if you have to do a 1400km stretch.

With 260l of fuel towing a trailer in 35-42 degree heat I got 2100kms that is Perth to Broome, not a problem with Aircon on all the way.

I think all three have their strong points but of the 3 I think the 3.0l is the best all rounder when you wiegh up fuel, running costs, power, price at purchase and what it can and can't do.

I rate the 3.0 above them.... there is a reason why they are so cheap, as they are way to underpowered. Have a drive of one, then hop into a ZD30 or TD42, the diffrence is obvious.
