rec reg for 4x4
is there such a thing as rec reg for a unregistered 4x4? mate got in trouble at neerin for trailering his hilux to neerin and then driving some of the tracks. How come the bikes are allowed to do it and not us 4wd'ers??

They cant.
There has been a blitz on unregistered bike in the Gembrook area. Tho most of them were registered.
It is public land and all motorized vehicles have to be registered.

Here in Tassie you can get rec rego for any vehicle, not sure of the requirements to get it though. You can also get a permit to drive a rec rego vehicle on roads that you nominate, subject to approval. I think the limit is about 10km's of road all up. Most farmers RV rego all their tractors, and all the old farm utes etc. Also a lot of people with shacks get rv rego on the vehicle that they leave at the shack just for launching their boats. A vehicle that has RV rego is covered by compulsory third party insurance in Tasmania!
I thought with the National Road Rules that this would be the same in all states??
Here is a link to a some of the info in Tasmania. Note that the MAIB premiums it talks about is the body that is our "compulsory third party" insurer.

And this is a link to info for conditional rego for a non adr approved vehicle:

Most enduro bikes these days are virtually motocross bikes with lights and a rego plate.
A half days work to re-advance the inlet cam and remove nasty things like ADR required exhast and inlet restrictors and VOILA! A WR450F becomes as powerfull as a YZ450F!
So just go and buy a rego-d bike. If you dont have the money, join a moto club and race.

Areas you may use a Recreation Motorcycle
Recreation motorcycles are restricted to operating on roads outside built-up areas, on local roads and Forest roads. (Built up areas are defined by speed zones of less than 100 km/h)
Recreation motorcycles may be operated in areas that are not roads, solely for the training and assessment of motorcycle learner permit holders by VicRoads Accredited Motorcycle Providers.
Recreation motorcycles are not permitted on freeways, state highways, main roads or tourist roads that are declared as such in the Transport Act 1983 .
VicRoads Country Street Directory (available from VicRoads bookshop and most bookshops) identifies the roads available to operators of recreation motorcycles. The directory specifies the 4 digit code for each road classification. Road that do not have a code are local roads.
why isnt there a similar thing for us 4x4ers? even if we had to get our trucks checked out by a mechanic or such and have working brakes , lights and a cage or some other requirements every 6 months to be allowed to drive them only on unsealed roads. even have them pass a standard RWC check . most vehicles would pass a roady but be unabled to be reg'd coz of no engineer cert.

we need someone with some knowledge to stand up and make some noise on our behalf. put a proposal to the powers that be. Introduce rec reg for 4x4 only if they pass a standard roadworthy test. make it like having a repairers permit. can buy either weekly or monthly and be confined to unsealed roads.
who would be the ppl to winge to vic roads or RTA?

youd be suprised on how many ppl would not to bother continuing the reg on their super modded rigs if this was available. I know it would allow some of us to do the mods we all want to do.

You are still only talking maybe a few dozen compared to the thousands of other wheelers that still cant get a voice in... Dont get me wrong, I see what your saying, I just think its impractical to expect miracles for a very small minority against the rest.
Maybe it is time for a group of blokes to throw $10g's in each and buy a few 100 acres? Build tracks to suit yourself, nobody can complain about erosion, destroying things, its your own land then...
Theres 100 acres in the high country for $89k well away from anywhere..
