Just have a few questions for some of the guru's out there.

My Nj has a 2" lift kit on it, or so I have been told. It seems to sit higher than other models getting around but what does it mean exactly?

I have stock rims and tyres which are 15x31x10.5 what bigger tyres can I fit on my car?

Last one, the old girl seems very harsh on the fuel once out on the highway doing any more than about 95km/h, are there any gear ratio swaps I can get done or have an extra gear put in?

Hi Zeus - Welcome to OL!

A 2" lift is probably referring to a suspension lift. Your front suspension has been adjusted, and rear springs replaced, to make the chassis and body sit higher above the ground. Have a look through the FAQ thread, reading the suspension lift links.

If you've got more time, use the search function to look for "supsension" & "lift" in the Mitsubishi forum. You'll get lots of hits, because suspension lifts are often mentioned in passing, because most members have one. :D

Largest tyre ex factory on the NJ was a 265/70-15, nominallly a little under 30" tall. The 31" tyres you have are the most common size of 4x4 tyre in Australia, and slightly larger than stock (most measure around 30.5", not 31. I presume you've got the GLS with factory flares? I think the 31x10.5s extend past non-flared guards, giving the men in blue suits an opoortunity to make some ticket sales.

Some people report running 32" tyres on NJ Pajeros without many problems, but general consensus is that a body lift is required to go larger.

Gears and economy! You have a 2.8 diesel (with or without turbo?) which only came with a 5 speed manual in Oz.

The Pajero isn't exactly aerodynamic; a suspension lift and wider tyres add to aerodynamic drag. More aggressive tyres (mud terrain instead of all terrain, for instance) also use more fuel. Try the usual things, like keep the engine well tuned, air filter clean, tyre pressures up, install a larger free-flowing exhaust.

A small selection of diff ratios are available, so it may be possible to improve your gearing a little depending on what you've got.

Larger tyres are probably the simplest way. You can lower cruising revs by altering the gearing, but then you lose out on acceleration, and off-road performance in steep terrain can suffer too.

I figured as much with the lift kit, just not exactly sure. Been spending heaps of time reading through the forums and looking at some sweet machines. I have a GL NJ with all the GLS body kit. Someone else did it so I am going to leave it on.

As my subject stated I have the 2.8D engine, no turbo. Bo hoo. I do have a T03/T04 combo that I am thinking about fitting when I have some cash together. I am happy with the fuel economy, power, on road & off road performance but would like a little bit more highway cruising above 95km (3,000rpm) so I can retain the good fuel economy I get. I have rescued my neighbour a number of times in his 88 F250...lol. Gearbox trouble the first time whilst towing a double horse float with 2 nags on board. The 2nd was when the old girl caught fire and had a round bale of hay on. Go the 2.8. He couldn't get over the torque and instant pulling power.

So many posts, so little time.

I also have the 2.8 and find the performance drops once i get it over 100km/h (mines the turbo) mine is reasonable at 12l/100km considering that when i took it over the weigh bridge a little while ago it broke 2.5T and has muds.

will be taking it to the doc for a tune up soon anyway as it's down on a little power, but going by the clearance i have i would say that 32" should fit easily. but as NJ said, the 31's just hang out so 32s will if i go for wider ones too, so might have to invest in the TJM ones

32" tyres will also drop your engine revs a bit on the highway, just remember that it will make your speedo read lower (I'd guess 32" on a Paj would cause about a 10% error)

have fun with it, I love mine!! (keen to try the exhaust idea after i get more play money together when she visits west end diesel)

i've just put on 31x10.5 onto my NJ GLX. Anyone got any advice on what flares I should go with ?

Also, I reckon my speedo's about 4 k's out. is there any fix for this ? The 31's definately changed the perormance, I've found I have to hold onto each gear a litle longer now, rather than short shifting.

Oops! :oops: Should have remembered that bit. I just know that my NJ doesn't have the factory lift - I forgot the 2.8s got it. :oops: 33" tyres should be OK once you have some suspension lift.
