253 V8

Post by Shorty40 »

Is anyone an 'expert' on these dinosaurs :?:

I think my coil has sh!t itself  Was a GT40 - but was told this should not have been used with an electronic dizzy :?

I am going to replace it. Was told a bosch MEC717 will do the trick - does that sound right ?

What is the best go with these engines - Electronic ignition ? Electronic dizzy ?

AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH :x All I wanna do is drive the freakin thing :x :x

if the coil you are talking about is the small compact type bosch these fail if the vehicle is running LPG the feed for the gas safety switch kills them if you want a good coil get the one from a VL Commodore V8 (these have a high tension lead commection that looks like a spark plug terminal) or a Ford XD-XE V8 with electronic ignition these have the convensional female type connection for the high tension lead. If you go to a parts store to buy a new one they may try and sell one of the compact ones make sure you get a oil fiiled type.

The best Dizzy you could run is the stock commodore electronic one.
As FIGJAM said use a VL V8 Coil or the 6CYL commodore Blue engines also ran the same coil. These are a fantastic coil and they will out perform most of the aftermarket big$$$ coils like Accel and Mallory. I have used these coils on Holden 308s that have run into the 10second 1/4 mile bracket.

Also if the ignition module has failed you can use one from a sigma/magna with electronic ignition or most any of the bosh electronic dizzy's.

On another note a good points dizzy is a good option for some people as they very rarely fail and are easy to repair and find parts for at odd hours/locations.
