2WD gearbox to 4WD transfer case

Post by Tinker »

I have an '82 hilux. I am investigating the possibilities of changing my four cylinder "petrol" engine and 4speed gearbox for a 5speed and a diesel engine. Can anyone tell me if the 2WD gearbox will "mate" with my transferbox? If so, what models?

what vehicle is your new engine and gearbox from?

the short answer is 'no' - it won't bolt together - even the gearboxes with the same designation but built for 2 or 4 wheel drive are significantly different - however there are other options. you could use a divorced transfer case from a Nissan Patrol MQ automatic, or Lada Niva, then make up a short drive shaft to mate the gearbox to the transfer case. you would also need to fabricate crossmembers and engine mounts to suit your new combination. If your new gearbox has a long tail (extension housing) then you may have difficulty with the short length of the rear tailshaft.

your other alternative is to try and source a 5 speed with transfer case already attached, from a later model hilux. 5 speed diesels were available from the early - mid 80's so there should be plenty out there, maybe not as plentiful as in Australia but they are out there.

good luck on your quest..

Ok, I need to find a donor truck. I have found more 2WDs than 4WD which made me ask the question!!

Thanks for the answer, Matthew
