I've searched this subject but can't seem to find much in the way of direct comparison (either that or I'm search illiterate).
I'd like to aftermarket turbo intercool the 1HZ in my 79 series instead of trading up to the factory turbo model. My brother and mates drive them but I'm not fussed. Good on the highway but my ute is offroad only.
I'll be doing the fitting myself and possibly get it dynoed later if necessary. So far I have found
AXT sold by TJM and Marks, use a water-cooled Garrett
DENCO use a Schwitzer S series
SAFARI sold by ARB
MTQ use a Mitsubishi TD05
4WD SYSTEMS
and then there is oil coolers, boost compensators & fuel enrichment kits.
So if anyone has any thoughts on which is the better kit and what 'box I should run after I blow the R151...

H150F (80 series diesel) or H151F (80 series turbo, petrol, 10* series turbo, petrol) are the gearbox to run once you kill the R151F (and you probably will!)

I have the denco on my 80 series, no intercooler or boost compensator, it soots up the oil pretty quickly, you have to be extra religious about 5000km oil changes and use a Jap spec oil (Castrol Jmax, Caltex Delo CXJ, or other high calcium oil) and consider upgrading to the ACL big end bearings - the sump has to come off for the turbo install and that is the hardest part of the big end bearing installation.
anyway the 80 went pretty hard with just 9psi boost, would comfortably wind out to 150km/h without too much effort. The denco/schwitzer setup is nice for mild boost, come on boost right off idle, virtually no lag to speak of. all the turbo kits out there are pretty good.

I had a AXT fitted to a 100 series 1HZ and found maximum boost came in to high in the rev range, most of my driving requires low down grunt and this wasnt helping, hade a new exhaust housing fitted by another company and made a lot of difference. I run 10 psi without an intercooler and have no problems.
AXTs overall attitude to the whole thing was fairly poor and would not recommend them.
From talking to other people who have had turbos fitted most of them who have used DTS or Denco have been very happy.

After reading this and talking to a few companies I think the best option is the MTQ turbo kit.
The only other issue I am curious about is the benefit of roller bearing turbos. The Mitz TD05 used by MTQ runs on bushes while the Garrett GT25 used by Safari and AXT runs on bearings. The streetcar guys seem to like roller bearing turbos because they reckon they spin more freely and spool up quicker. But the old style bushed type might be more durable?
I am also waiting on prices and specs on a water-to-air intercooler. Might be more suitable for slow speed off roading. I was disapointed to find the MTQ cooler sits over the top of the turbo.

I have a 100 series non turbo would it totaly screw the motor if i added an after market turbo on it?
I hope not but I am about to find out.
I couldn't see the sense in a motor swap when I had such a good motor with a good reputation. If I blow up my 1HZ I'll be looking for a V8 diesel.

It has done only done 110,000 ks?
installed and tuned properly, a turbo can potentially increase the life of a diesel engine by lowering EGT's.
the downside of turboing the 1HZ diesel 100/105 series is the R151F gearbox, which is marginal even behind the non-turbo motor. If you tow, or drive hard offroad, the gearbox will die long before the engine.

I have an 1994 80 series with a turbo glide turbo. I have had this car for only a couple on months and I think my old 1992 troopie with a straight 1HZ with extractors had more grunt. This thing also gets what I believe to be shit fuel economy on 6 kms to the litre my troopie got at least 8. It does not have a intercooler or boost compensator fitted and blows very little smoke.
Any suggestions, I am thinking of taking to a Dyno tuner to get them to have a look see what boost and fuel mixure it is running.
Took the old mans 2001 troopie with an after market turbo and there was a huge difference, problem is that it was done by Halls in Cairns and I will not the up that in this rig for a while.

Guys, the 1hz loves a turbo If it is installed and tuned properly. If your looking for power, trade it in on a 4.5 and wear the fuel costs....or on a hdft factory turbo and wear the purchase price....but if you want drivability, your on the right track...good economy and good power....if you dont get that from a 1hzt, then there is something wrong, and it is probably the fuel system (read pump/injecters) Best person for that job is a specialist diesel shop. Also check out the tech pages on www.lcool.org for ways of assisting your pump suck the fuel from the tank....

I purchased my HZJ80 brand new in 1992 and had a Safari Turbo system fitted at 26000kms.When I sold the vehicle in 2004 it had 300000kms on it and the turbo and engine were both fine.Regular oil changes and driving it but not abusing were all I did.It ran 9lb of boost and standard exhaust.
Well thats all very interesting that you guys are having no problems with overheating or longevity without intercoolers (274,000kms ). However, I still want to intercool my ute.
Denco told me they prefer the air cooled Schwitzer for better power but could supply me with a Garrett if I wanted watercooling.
I like the sound of their water to air intercooler. Unit is still next to the turbo for short plumbing but no need to cut a hole in the bonnet. The downside, which is bugger all, is a more complicated system with glycol radiater and electric pump.

The diesel motor runs cooler than a equivalent petrol because more of the explosion is turned into power and less left to turn to heat.....an intercooler will lengthen the life of a turbo diesel if it is set up good (again) the water to air coolers have been spoken about on lcool at the moment or a few days ago...have a look through the archives there....i would use the water cooled turbo simply because the factory one is, and the cooler the oil gallery is, the less carbon to build up there when you bake the oil after shutdown.

Its off a 2003 GU that has only done 33,000ks. the bloke who ownes it has upgraded to a denco one and a bigger intercooler, so he has the old turbo and old intercooler for sale. He said he only wants about $300 for the turbo and wasnt sure about the intercooler. The only thing is i would have to get a different manifold to suit my 100 series.
does this sound like it would be a good buy?

Otherwise its too autometer for an expensive but good gauge.

It looks like I'll be going for the Garrett water-cooled roller bearing turbo with water to air IC. I will fit an oil temp guage and moitor things before deciding on a oil cooler. I do want a fuel aneroid or boost compensater but no-one will sell me a DIY kit. Might have to pull the pump off and send it away for modification.

That price is for the water to air intercooler only.
The Denco turbo kit would add around $3000 to that price.
More if you want the Garrett over the Schwitzer.
More if you want the fuel aneroid.

Well I drove a 100 Series GXL auto wagon on the weekend. This thing has a Safair turbo, Safari intercooler, fuel aneroid and 2.5" mandrel exhaust. It is the daily driver/showcase vehicle of a namebrand 4WD store manager so I guess it could (and does) have anything and everything on it.
I was so dissapointed that I've gone right off the whole turbo idea.
I realise that you only get what you pay for and it is a lot cheaper to turbo an existing motor than pull on an engine swap but I didn't think it was going to be that gutless.
I had driven 5 or 6 turbo'd 1HZs before intercoolers came along and wasn't interested until I could buy an off the shelf intercooler and fuel aneroid to do it "properly".
A full set up now,with turbo, intercooler, fuel aneroid, oil cooler and exhaust could cost $6000 to $7000 plus fitting. Somehow I don't think the value is there for the performance gained.
