Aftermarket Sunroof's / Wreckers
would be great if people could build a lil bit of a list of like... Best toyota wreckers... please list places, phone numbers, and yeh...
neway, more to my question.... 85 Xtra Cab sr5 Lux'es came with genuine Sunroof's, my question is... how much effort would one suggest would be involved in putting one into an 88 Xtra Cab that didn't have it standard... and how hard is it to get the right seal so as to avoid leaks etc... is it a diy job, or strictly professional, and the best places to source a genuine sunroof of an 85, without payin 700 bux from toyota :O:O
thx in advance
ben

Sunroof was never an option in aus model hilux's
I have one in the cab that im rebuilding and the bloke at toyota said that the ones with the factory sunroof was actually an import from when they had a shortage of hilux's in the mid 80's
took me 7 weeks to get a replacement glass section for mine from japan and cost me $495

Lol I just made a panel out of my old cab. Screw paying 500 to get sunburnt. I'm just gonna make the catch a quick release type so its removable if I do want a bit of sun or air.

just cut the roof off dude besides, don't four runners already only have half a roof?

I really dont think a stock one would eb classed as a "DIY install" You'd actually have to cut the whole section out of an existing "sunroofed" roof and weld it in place in a whole in your roof. I could never see you getting it straight like this. It is possible to get aftermarket ones though. Id be worried about it sealing. Even the stock ones the glass doesnt really follow the curve of the roof and leakes in. They just rely on the drains inside the jamb part to drain qiuck enought hat it doesnt overflow inside the cab.............
Sorry if none of that made sense.....

i actually thought u should be able to cut the hole in your roof and then rubber it up etc etc etc... but just using the parts, put teh hole in yourself, then add glass and hinges etc... its still the same roof, just with a window...
am i wrong and mislead... or just aiming high

You are mislead. What you describe is an aftermarket sunroof like what is shown in the pictures above. The stock sunroof isn't just the same roof witha hole cut in it. There is a deep jamb section pressed into it. over 50 mm deep in the middle section at a guess. I will take a pic this arvo to show you what I mean. This is why I said you would have to cut out this whole section and weld it in place in your own roof.
Hi
In the panel industry there is a tool called a rebating tool, what it does is put step ledge or rebate into the steel around the the edge. It also strengthen the steel panel and stops the whoop whoop thing.
The one I used was air operated.
HTH
Cheers

If you're not on the edge, you're taking up too much space.....
