removing engine

Post by STUMPY »

about to pull out my engine from the 4runner

would you
A: remove motor seperate from gearbox?
B: remove motor and gearbox together?
C:remove motor, gearbox and transfer case (if you can) all at once?

cheers joel

The only problem when removing engine and gearbox/transfer is height above to get it all up &out and getting the angle of the dangle. Me I like to get eng out and drop gearbox/transfer on the floor.
I'm not stuck I'm over here!

I pulled the whole shebang out of my 2nd gen no worries. I had everything forward of the engine removed though.

out of your what? If thats a 2nd generation comm then it doesnt have a transfer case which is at least as big and heavy as GB
depends what work you want to do? If its the clutch maybe eng/GB as it is always easier to get the 2 together on the floor. Ive never tried all three together but I imagine it wouldnt be easy due to total length, weight of transfer case and awkwardness. You couldnt sling it anywhere near level. And as mentioned height could be a problem thats assuming youve got decent lifting gear

Pulled the motor/g'box/t'case out of surf all in one go with std engine crane. You can get enough height out of it, but will need to swing the lot around and manually lift the t'case end over the rad support panel (not heavy).

You virtually have to lift the shabang out vertically, but I managed on my own - with the help of lots a profanities!!

I dropped the box and transfer separately, then the motor in my 2nd gen, was a piece of cake and didn't take much more effort to do it that way.

LOL man get off the ganja. Plenty of vehicles have "2nd gens". Seeing as hes talking about a 4runner (hilux) wouldnt you assume I meant a 2nd gen hilux(84-88) . Also how is a transfer case as big and heavy as a gearbox. I could walk around with a hilux transfer all daybut fuck doing that with a g52.

Anyway back on topic......as texas said it is quite easy to pull out complete if you have the lifting gear. Just hook it up to the crane/block and tackle, lose the gearbox crossmember and undo the engine mounts, then start lifting. I found I got the angle to pull it out no worries. The only thing to do as mentioned is you have to manually lift the transfer over the the rad support that is easy. then pull the crane away/ push the car away depending on the equip[ your using.

well knock me over with a feather Mr hybrid, but it would be easier to say when it was made given that he says its a 1st gen and you say the same years are 2nd gen? Given that the only vehicle Ive seen advertised as any "generation" is a commodore, I apologise for offending you into a bout of sarcasm

lol english is my second language sarcasm being my first. The 2nd gen hilux and 1st gen 4runners are pretty much the same car. Cut the 4runner in the appropriate place and you get a 2nd gen singlecab/xtracab/dualcab lux. The 4runner is practically just a new addition to the model line of the hilux in this generation. But true, Stumpy may have thought I meant a 2nd gen 4runner but I've seen him around on the board enough to hope he wasnt thinking I meant a bommadore. Anyway Stump wheres the feedback on how it went?
