Ok, I spoke to the guy, he indicates that its really old, but works well.
But doesnt winch out (only winches in and has free spool) Does this make sense? Did they make one like this?

Well I got my 8274 from the Trading Post - Cost me $700 sure it's about 10years old - but it had never been used according to the over and had never been fitted just stored in his shed - and based on my inspection I believe him.....
Anyways I wanted the Himount for several reasons & I'm not all comp focused.....Reasons IMHO:
I like the faster line speed not just for racing against the clock - but lesschance of overrunning the winch if you are winching & driving at the same time.
I like the external brake should I choose to run Synthetic rope I now it's less likely to overheat either the internal brake or the rope.
I like the forward mounting feet - makes more sence in my book for the winch to be pulling itself onto the mount when under load rather than attempting to ripp itself away (ie bottom mount).
I like the fact that it's easier to modify (if you choose) & more importantly easier to service yourself.
I like the fact that it carries more length - but really if you don't need the extra length for comps you could always have a seperate shorter cable for that sort of comp.....rarely have I heard anyone saw I have too much cable - but I've sure as heck heard a few say they don't have enough....especially when running snatch blocks.
Lastly - I like the distinctive sound of the clicks

while 8000 lb doesnt sound much the fact that its fast enough to drive and winch at the same time means that it is effectivly a lot bigger.
the biggest problem is the physical size of the thing.
I am in the middle of remounting mine to get it back closer to the radiator as the bar had to stick out a lot to clear it.
but remember one thing, the more capeable your truck, the harder it will be stuck

ATM I have a low 9000lb warn, it is a great winch and I have NEVER had a problem with it. I find it ok for the comps I have done so far. But yes it is slow
I am (when $ allows) going to buy a new winch, I will be getting a low 9500lb HS warn. Why you ask? Well it will fit in any winch bar, is smaller, is lighter, pulls less amps, is not that much slower then a high mount (basicly the same when pulling 1800kgs, approx hilux weight) and is about $500 cheaper then a high mount when bought new. Can get a low 9500lb for about $1800.

Woody rebuilt his and according to him it was a head*uck but from what i have seen it was well worth it. Last time i was talking to him, at christmas he was going to update, he didnt say why but it might be worth your knowledge to know.
So yeah, if it works and it is cheap, from what i have seen i would buy it.

Can't be bothered playing around with it, so I didnt buy it. Interesting it has a cable operated free spool that can be used from the dash standard.
