I have an 88 troopy, with a 4WD low range problem
When in high range, it turns all four wheels, no problems, works fine
However, when shifting to low range, it seems that power only goes to the rear wheels, and you can very faintly hear a very slight grinding sound like 2 toothed wheels just lightly rubbing on each other..
Would this be a High/Low range lever adjustment problem?
are these run with linkages ?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to get stitched up by a mechnic.

I'd rather raise the carport than lower the fourby
If the 5 speed is like the older four speeds (i've never stripped a 5 spd) then once you pull the transfer lever towards the back of the car front drive is engaged, and when you pull the lever across to the right low range is engaged.
But, if the lever was to go across to the right and forwards at the same time it would dis-engage the front drive - but there are stops to stop the lever from doing this.
Like i said - i'm not sure if they're the same - can't even remember the shift pattern...

Make sure the t/case lever is all the way rearward to engage low range. The bracket on the side of the t/case is only held on with two bolts and it can pivot allowing the t/case lever to go forward creating 2WD low.

I have an '87 model sounding like similar problem.On the drivers side of transfer there is a nut in line with selecter rod. undo nut SLOWLY as there is a small spring and ball bearing that may pop out.That spring maintains tensionon the selector,have a look inside while someone moves 4x4 gear lever and see if the bearing seat in the rod properly.If not replace spring(I just put a washer between nut and spring to increase tension as short term repair 5yrs ago).It took me 3yrs to find the problem,which was when in low range I would loose all drive and hear the same sort of sound.Email me if confused with my explanation.
I lost all drive but when I think about it I'm pretty sure it could go either way it just depends if the spring and ball allows the selector fork to go in or out slightly.The ball bearing rides on top off or half way up the indent.Do what I did chuck a washer between the plug and spring to seat the ball correctly and see how it go's.You can't damage anything and don't need to open the transfer.Any hassles just ask.
you either have pulled the transfer lever over too far, or not far enough.

I find that if I just gently guide the lever over it works fine, If I'm any more aggressive, I'll have problems...

It appears I just have to be gentle....
tried the pulling back at the same time as shifting to the right into low range, and it works a treat, after 3 attempts at engaging 4L today in the dunes accross the road, it worked every time (still got friggin bogged though).
I'm liking the washer in soring idea, if it gives me any trouble the next couple of times, I think i'll give that a go, but I think it's just my passion fingers that were giving me grief.

one more question for all who read, has anyone had anything to do with lock rite diffs ???
air lockers are financially out of the equation, and LSD's are few and far between.
Being an 88 troopy, it has open centre's front and rear, and I want more traction at least in the back, and then in the front later on.
Any idea's ???
