From limited research the FX324C are hard to get so I would get what ever you can if you want one.

For any GPS in the car I'd be trying to run an external aerial. They work so much better and don't dropout anywhere near as much.

I run a Magellan FX324C and a Toshiba PDA. They are both linked up together so I can send and receive data between them.

On the PDA I run Oziexplorer for bush stuff. So with 4GB of Topo Maps and Name Search Files its great. Its good being able to look at the PDA and see where I am on a map. Then I compare it to the same printed map that I have. It takes the hard work out of Navigating.

I got a copy of destinator as well. That is great for in the city only as it will tell you where your going. Eg Turn left here.

So what is oziexpolorer like?

I have an Magellan Explorist 600. Tosing up whether to go the cheaper option of ozexplorer, or go for the magellan Discover Aus Topo.
Cheers,

My PDA setup cost around $1000. I can run turn by turn (voicce prompt) nav program (Garmin) or moving map over regular topo maps or sat photos (Ozi-explorer). Also comes in handy for other stuff (even e-mail & web searching in wireless hotspots while on holidays...).
I'm a big fan of the Magellan, but the PDA offers so much more in the way of features.

If you want to choose between Discover Aus Topo or Oziexplorer.

May be have a look at what digital maps are available for the areas that you regularly goto and the areas that you want to goto in the future.

I know in Vic we have some great digital maps that are available for the popular spots.

And if you have to pay for them how much they will cost?

How do you use the laptop in the car. Have you got it mounted somewhere?

What happens to the laptop in a accident?

I paid $90 for my PDA on ebay, $200 for navman sleeve on ebay and $160 for Oziexplorer (PC and PDA software). Works a treat and ended up with both the navman for town and Oziexplorer for the bush all for $450 :D

I just scan my paper maps and all is good (even scaned my street directory to show where at Menai I was playing :)
