Removing 6 inch lifted coil and shock removal tips please...

Post by bruiser »

80 series GXL landcruiser
Have to get my vehicle inspected next week so I will be removing my 6inch lifted suspension and puting back on the old stuff.

Anyone got any tips.
My understanding is to remove shocks then jack up body to full droop and hope you can get the springs out. Only problem is that these springs expand a bloody long way so there may be problems with this theory.

Any Tips would be great

Disconnect one end of your panhard and remove your shockies. Then jack up the body and untill it's high enough to remove and replace the springs by hand. Then just bolt everything back on and drive away. Same for the front too. :D

how big is your jack, you might have to jack it then put stands under it, then set the jack up again on some blocks

while the springs have weight on them, use tiedowns to 'hold' them compressed.. then when you jack it up, they should stay compressed and fall out.

I reckon I will have to tie off the springs compressed as I cant see how I will be able to lift the vehicle high enough beyong full expansion. I can only imagine how hi that is going to be.
What do u's reckon.

Instead of using a jack, drive up a big ramp!!

Seriously, even the super cheap spring compressors would hold your springs down while you jack up and you should be able to remove them fine.

Without compressing a big spring you are pretty limited. Once its as high as you can get it, put it on chassis stands. Undo shocks and jack it up under diff centres (one end at a time) and take off the wheels and drop the jack as far as you can. This gives ya a bit more droop if ya jacks not high enough. If thats not enough, you have to compress the springs (safest way), or get the body higher with a highlift (read very dodgy) or something. Using a second jack you can jack up one side of the diff using first jack as a pivot, to get a bit more droop if your rotors arn't hitting already. Front arms can be pushed down a bit more with a bottle jack between the chassis and arm. Can get 7 inch springs out of a GQ this way, not sure on a cruiser.

I reckon you'll want to undo the swaybar as well.

Yeah sorry forgot about the sway bar cause I don't have any. If you have a highlift jack and some chassis stands you'll be fine. You disconect the panhard from the diff cause it will fight against the controll arms and stop the diff from dropping far enough. It also lets you do both sides at the same time. Next time you try this jack your car up with the panhard attached and measure when the wheels leave the ground and then repeat this with the panhard disconnected and see the difference. Obviously with the shockies disconnected. I have a GU ute and I don't take the wheels off but you could take the wheels off and drop the diff down so you don't have to jack the chassis so high. The reason I do it this way is it is a lot quicker and easier than using spring compressors. Takes about 30min to do a complete diff as oppossed to 30min for each spring with compressors.

Hey there, i just had to do it to my GQ with 7" springs, im not very good with mechanic work and i was able to do it!! All i did was remove panhard rod, undid shocks, jacked it up as high as you can with blocks, then put it on the stands, take off your wheels and your diff will drop low enough for the springs to fall out. mine did. Getting the car off the stands was a bit of a hassle!!! I wish i had a forklift!!!

Steve I know this was not in your post, but have you looked into the legalities of your suspension, you may be closer to approval than you think, without going to the hassle of removing the kit.
