24 spline axles to county cvs

Post by andrew e »

im changing the front of my 86 county from a 10 spline open to a 24 spline arb locker, i want to keep the bigger cvs. i was quoted $753.50 for a set of maxidrive axles, which i thought was a bit steep, has anyone else gone down the same path and sourced axles from elsewhere? How much $$$$$

whats the breakage rate of others compared to maxi's? its just that at that price the axles would cost me more than my locker itself!

Jacmac should make them as well. Judging by material strength (MD-hytuf JM-EN25) they may be a bit weaker than MD but I doubt you would ever break them.

I have an 86 110 also & doing the same thing at the

moment. Jacmac quote 550. But I can get a pair of disco

c.v.,axels& brakes cheaper so I`m going to give them a go.

I never broke anything on my RR with a similar set up.

So i`ll wait and see what happens. Also going to 4.1 R&P.

The sals back end is a delema, thinking of changing that to a

disco houseing as well as I already have a locker & axels to suit,

then at least i`d have rear discs, just have to lengthen rear tail

shaft i think as the sals is longer, anyway good luck with yours.

salisbury rear end is easy to change ratios,
its the same as a dana 60 so there is plenty of ratios available
4.11 is very common because a lot of the bigger ford f trucks had these gears.
if you want to put discs on the rear of a drum braked defender/county-
use defender bolt on caliper mounts(there were some 95-98??)
county rear spindles
county front hubs
i believe the hubs need to be machined because the disc is thicker than the drum brake gear.
this way you get the widest spaced bearings and disc brakes.

Jeff

I can show you my sals its disc brake converted and running dana gears
in an 85 housing

I had to get Maxidrive to make the axles 25mm longer as I used my original disco outers

Still need to mod the tailshaft as the dana gears have a different coupling

Im running 4.11

I am currently doing an opp on my 93 Rangie going back to 86/87 CV's with early model hub... I get to keep my vented dsic and 4 sopt calipars (whoohoooooo) I am using Maxi Axles (don't buy from Maxi direct u will get cheaper price) with 4.11 R&P I like the idea of having a easy to get to fuse IF somthing goes wrong.... but i am not sure if it's going to be any better (cv's that is) then my fine spline that were in there before... anyway time will tell
