4.88 Vs 4.3???
Ok how many of you guys have gone from 4.3s to 4.88s or visa-versa and did you realy notice the difference in gearing in low or high?
A mate of mine has a 308 in his hilux and has used both and never realy noticed a difference.
The reason i am asking is because i can get hold of 4.3 high pinions at the right price but cant find a 4.88 anywhere so i was thinking of going to 4.3s.I have double cases so low range is no real prob.I know the Yanks all go for 4.88s but thats because 4.3s are rare over there and most of there rigs have 4.1s fitted stock.
Also i think they may be a little stronger then the 4.88s.

Are you going to run hi-pinion in the rear?? Might not like the 38's and the dual cases!!
Chris.
4.3 should be stronger than 4.88's.
As for noticing the difference, i had 4.1 in the surf and went to 4.5's couldn't notice the diff (get DIFF haha).
And as for running a high pinion in the rear there is an arguement about stating that there just as strong in the rear as in the front.
Dont ask me why

On topic, I think with lesser powered engines you notice ot more.
I moved from a 31 to a 32 inch tyre and lost a heap of power and about 30km top speed loss.
I have 4.56 and I am moving to 4.88's.
anyway my thoughts.

A low geared comment: I don´t know about Toyota diffs but I do know that Dana/Spicer diffs have one more cogs on the 4.56 pinion than on the 4.88, thus making it considerably stronger due to a larger contact area.
So if you guys are running dual cases 4.56 is the way to go. That is assuming you installed dual cases to work along with biggish tires.
4.56, 4,27 and 4.11 (at least) have the same number of cogs on the pinions. Again Dana/Spicer lore, but Toyota is most prablably the same.

if you don´t know its impossible, you just might do it!
i have 33's with 4.3's the only real diff i noticed with em is can't take off in second anymore.Drop Bear wrote:Agreed. Mines a little slower off the mark but goes better on the highway. another thing, i thought 4.8's were stronger centre's

A mate has a 2.8 turbo dual cab Lux that had 4.3's when he went to 33"s he noticed the difference big time as he lives in a hilly area with lots of bends. He went up to 4.56's (Tonka's old diffs) and he said it bought it back to like when he had 32"s.
He runs 34" JT2's offroad only but he notices the difference onroad but not so much in low range. He is not going 4.88's as he runs the 33"s most of the time and he's reasonably happy with that.

I just luv my "clacker Jabber"
go the 4.88 i run 35s on the luxs and i notice a big difference... I blew a 4.88 had to put a 4.3 in for the mean time it gets me around f but its slow as no more 5th gear so my opinion go the 4.88 ( my 2cents)
Benny (krawla off here) runs 4.88 high pinion in the rear for months and months only blew it at Tuff trucks cause started to bounce and thats not good and he runs 37s on the zook

without having to do all the maths, would it be safe to say having 33's on a 4.3 diff is the same as 35's on a 4.8?Guts wrote:this thread is 2 and a half years old
4.8s + 33s on a 2.8 hilux will make the speedo about 1 or 2kms out at 110, that is how close they make your final drive ratio to standard gearing and standard tyres.

drive in, drive out would be around $1800 +/- $200 - knock off a few hundred if you pull the diffs out yourself.fish_man wrote:i have a bundy with the lil ol 22R (2.4p) i have 33's on it at the moment how i brought the car, where can i find out what diff ratio's i have? as i want 4.88's after reading this whats the average price on getting both diffs swaped over?
thanks heaps
you can find out the diff ratio in your toyota by reading the axle code off the build plate on the firewall (assuming they have never been changed over), use google to find a table of toyota axle codes or post the code up here, lots of people have the table bookmarked or otherwise handy.
on a bundy it is probably better value for money to buy a set of marks transfer gears with high range reduction, it costs about the same as re-gearing the diffs and you get to keep your stronger centres (they will be 4.56 or 4.30 in a petrol bundera - if 4.56 then changing to 4.875 is only 7% change in ratio, the marks gears are 8% underdrive in high range.

another thread dig, but that rough price quoted, can you break that down for me? how much does two 4.88 centers cost?
if i can get my hands on that easy enuff, how hard's the swap over?
that price is massive
indubitably
you can get 4.88 lux centres for as little as $100 from wreckers if you pull them yourself.De-lux wrote:dumbdunce wrote:drive in, drive out would be around $1800 +/- $200 - knock off a few hundred if you pull the diffs out yourself.fish_man wrote:i have a bundy with the lil ol 22R (2.4p) i have 33's on it at the moment how i brought the car, where can i find out what diff ratio's i have? as i want 4.88's after reading this whats the average price on getting both diffs swaped over?

new aftermarket gears are approx $450 per diff
bearings approx $150 per diff
labour to install gears and bearings approx $250 per diff
r and r $150 front, $100 rear
these are realistic walk in off the street prices, some places will charge a LOT more. Toyota wants about $1200 per diff for the gears alone.
