This is my first post on this site. I am new to 4B's and have just bought a MQ patrol but it has a Ford XF 4.1 under the hood. What I wnated to know was at the rear of the engine where it bolts to the bell/clutch housing mine only joins at the top and has a small meatl plate at the bottom but this does not seal. As in I can put my finger on the flywheel in a number of spots could Ibe losing oil through here while it is driving. I am going through 3-4L a fornight. But there is no leakes on the ground and it does not really blow black smoke. Please Help this problem is really stressing me out.
You wont be losing oil there as its not supposed to be there. The clutch must run dry, if it has oil on it then it will give all sorts of trouble.
How many k's are you doing to your 3-4 litres?
If its using that much oil it will either be blowing blue smoke or have heaps of crakcase pressure.
To check crankcase pressure, remove the rubber hose from the air filter to the rocker cover. Start the engine, if there are heaps of fumes coming from there then the engines buggered, the air filter will also have oil in it.
If its like this then take it to a mechanic & confirm the diagnosis.
Don't ask me, ask them. I'm just runnin for my life myself.
Well they are all following you...
No they ain't, I'm just in front...............
Thanks for the info. It is only at present doing about 200k for that amount of oil. The other thing is that there is no oil in the air cleaner clean as whistle and there is bearly even a hint of blue smoke. Only when you rev it real hard while idling with a rag over the tail pipe do you get black soot on the rag but not a lot.
The rear seal leak is common for the 4.1 crossflow engine. Get the seal replaced with a aftermarket Nitrite seal running on a speedie sleeve and it should fix the oil leak from the bell housing.
The blue smoke is not so easy to fix... Engine rebuild.
