Hi,
Can anybody tell me if the 4.2L D imports from Japan are the same spec as the lwb ones we get here? Basically want to know if I am going to have a nightmayer getting parts for it or can they be sourced locally from Nissan?
Also, does anybody know of any importers in NSW?

If you want a 3rd batt for 12v. Proably best to fit a small 12v alt as well. Shouldnt be hard to do withthe amount of Nissans going around now with 2 alt's now.
But as for the battery. Some of those deep cycle gel batts are pretty small. Optima I think they are. Just not cheap though. But they can be mounted at any angle you want.

I've had mine for a just over a year mabs and Ive had no probs with it, the air locker runs off a 24v compressor instead of 12v and i've got a 24v to 12v transformer for my alarm and stereo and such. spring lift and every thing else is just peachy...im just spewin I gotta get rid of it to get a ute

do ARB sell a 24V solonoid? the switches that light up, are they 24V also?
what compressor are you running?
Recently I was in the high country in victoria and had to get some parts for my Rocky. I travelled into Mowell which I think is only 150kms from melbourne. There is a wrecker there that I found called Louges 4wd wrecker or something like that and he is importing a heap of half cuts from japan especially gqs so if you are after 24v parts they should be able to help you. Hopefully I have been some help.

you could get 24volt selinoids/relays fairly cheap and same with your lighted switches...alot of the ones ive seen for auto use are 24v rated but are just used on a 12v system...

I want to take a look at a swb, I don't care if it's an import or not..........
The reason, because I have never had the chance to look one over in detail and the guy who imports them is in Queensland........mainly I just want to see how much space......or lack of it......is in the rear to stuff gear for trips...

As far as size etc is concerned swb safarais are no different to standard GQ shorties here. ie; really only a two seater. THey are also not like the toyota surf as far as parts are concerned thank god, except for maybe the plethora of electrical gizmos most of them have... Like inbuilt nutsack warmer...
I have seen a few import swb safaris that have rear heater/storage compartments to both sides of the rear passenger seat. This effectively makes them a 4 seater instead of five. But once you rip the rear seat out you got lots of room.... You can even sleep in the back, if you push the front seats forward a long way and stack gear in the rear foot well, and you must be less than 6'1".....
I believe ARB sell dual position cargo barriers for shorties. So this would give you the option's of #1 behind rear seat #2 behind drivers seats w/ rear seat removed. I have alwayz thought of getting one but never been arsed. I suppose with the first option the benefit is that you can really stack right to the roof and shite wont hit you in the back of the head, but there still isn't a heck of a lot of room.
Truthfully if you want space + comfort get a LWB. I own a shortie though and I believe realistically they are only a two seater... with more than enough room for camping gear and shite with the rear seat removed + cargo barrier. The nimblness and Coolness factor for me outweighs the benefits of the LWB : ).

Mabs there is plenty of room in the back for trips. My girlfriend and I spent a month cruising from brissy to the nsw/vic border and back and it was no probs, it just takes a bit of organization thats all. We used plastic storage boxes from crazy clarks for everything. Highly recommend getting a roof rack though as its good for bulkier items like swags/ boards/ bikes all that crap. Mine has the little storage thingos over the rear wheel arches and they are incredibly usefull for recovery gear and other crap

mate of mine sleeps in the back of his shorty, puts the back seats down and Zzzzzzzzzzzz no cargo barrier though
buy yourself a 4x4 trader magazine and have a look..
If you purchase a 1996 or 1997 SWB Safari, you will find they are 12 volt. It makes for a hell of a lot easier when you want to add bits to them. Mine is 12 volt 1997 - I am in NZ and we dont have a problem with parts although saying that you dont need to buy many parts, cause they dont break.

We can only get 88's and 89's due to the 16 yr import rule. I have looked at this myself I wanted a newer one but it can't be done.

Anybody know if I can fit a 40L Engel in the back of a swb without folding the rear seats down?
They have more space in the back than most people think. With the back seat still in, you can fit a 40L Engel in the back easy. I can fit my 80L Waeco in plus 1 jerry can with the back seat still in, but she is full then You need fairly flat speakers in the rear doors though to fit the 80L, as its pretty tight. Also a Waeco cooler that fits about 16 beers fits in perfectly on the floor between the centre console and the back seat. Excellent for day trips and weekends away with the mates.

I have a SWB you can look at but I am unsure what advantage you will get as it is a 15+ year old car.
Most will all be different and all in different conditions. Mine has a chev V8 in it so it is different in that regard.
I would suggest to do what bogged said and get a copy of 4x4 trader.

Mabs I just took the back seats out altogether, I generally leave them out as its only a 5 second job to put them back in. The only problem I've had with mine is that it will drain the passenger side battery slowly so that I have to charge it overnight once ever 1 or 2 months. Thats about it
The reason your passenger battery drains is because it is the 12v one and has accessories of it instead of through a 24-12 reducer. Running the batteries this way shortens the life of the 24v battery as it is constantly overcharged as the alternator tries to balance the 2 bats.
The only serious problem I have found in servicing many GQs is a worn out Vacuum Pump on the alternator, I am worried about a shortage of these items in the future, Nissan NZ don't carry or price it.
