front diff in rear?

i went to the wreckers the other day to get another diff to replace the bufggered one in my 4runner. What he gave me was a 4.5 diff, but a front diff. his reasoning was that it had done less work.

then a guy at work who knows his shit on cars, said thats crap, and that the meshing of the gears will be all wrong.

so, can a front diff go into a rear? i'm talking solid axle here too...

Yep sure can.
Both are interchangable.
The front diff centre is really a rear working on the wrong side of the gears when its setup in front.
So it will work fine in the back!

Technically he is kind of right , when ive set up diff gears i always set the gear contact pattern for the normal direction of rotation, but what the wrecker said i justafiable. I have specifically brought s/hand front diffs for that reason and run them in the back with no prob's so far.

cool. so even though the pinion is turning the crown wheel on the underside of the teeth, it will still run/sound/wear as normal?

When in the front it is doing this.

When in the back its running on the correct side of teeth.
