GQ SWB Fuel

Just wondering how big the tank is in a mav/gq SWB is? and how many Km you are getting from the tank. Im looking at getting one, but need to konw what the fuel consumption is, any help would be sensational!

about 90L and between 16L to 20L per 100kms

All Nissan Aus ones are 95lt, some of the jap imports are 60lt.

As for fuel economy
TD42 5psd - 13-14lt/100km. Have had alot worse though and best ever was 10lt/100km.

My SWB normally take about 75-80lt to fill. Didint now they had a 90lt.

They dont have a low fuel light do they?

I nomally get 350km out of a tank city driving.

Thanks guys. the 22L posts seem pretty high. SO they tend to chew through the fuel?

On another forum someone said that they get about 10l/100 on the hway and 11.5 - 12.5 L around town. Is this accurate do you think?

I've found that on quite a few GQ's that the fuel guage be on the 'E' line and the fuel light on.... and kept driving...and went past the E by another 1/8th

Its my guess that theres another 20 litres remainign even after the fuel light/guage is on E line...

I just drove my GQ til it ran out to work out where it'll run out that way i know im spot on with the refuelling..

MMmmmm I might get 19-20 on hwy

11.5 doubt it, even if it was the 3Lt they still use more then that because of the weight.


I am talking about a TB42 not TD42 ;)

Yep 95L tanks on both petrol and diesel.
The best I got was around 10L/100km with 31 inch tyres going up the highway to Coffs.
Now days I get around 13-15L/100km around the city with 35 inch tyres and 7 inch lift. It doesnt change much on the freeway either though.

Where is the low fuel light?

Mine is a 1988 patrol, maybe they didnt have one then?

I have a petrol 1988 GQ SWB and it definitely dose not have a low fuel light.

The only information light as circled in the top left corner, is for when the rear stabiliser is disconnected.

I've owned 3 nissan, all with fuel gagues that say "E" with at least 15-20 litres still in the tank.

Yeah I guess I could test by having some spare fuel on board ;)

But I can not see one, only my sway bar disconnect.

seems if you have a swaybar disconnect you dont have the warning light or at least it's in a different spot (more likely).

My 89 SWB Mav has a low fuel light (but no swaybar disconnect), but I've never seen it on so I dunno if it works or not.

I might try it out too.

Every Nissan I've owned probably had 1/4 a tank at the E line.

In my 2.8L Turbo diesel I never got less than 11. something standard and with 33 inch tyres obviously it gets worse. 12. something, but there was no fuel blowouts in the bush. Fuel consumption was still pretty good off road. 4.2 litre petrol was 20L per 100km+ and double that in the bush but this isn't so accurate because you stop counting with a petrol.:x Shane

Tank is meant to be 86 litres.

Did a top up of 20 litres in my recent test to eb sure. SWB mav 88 carburettor 4.2 Petrol...... here's the results.


Town (brisbane) driving only. 363km off 84l, but running oversize tyres. On par with what most people reckon - I topped up $20 (20.7 litres) at 328 near empty but still seemed to have plenty left.



Speedo correction of 8% approx (33.1 vs 30.6" tyres) = 392km off 84 litres.


4.67 km per litre = 21.39 litres per 100km city cycle.

Old school thats about 13mpg so not real flash at all.


Mitigating factors here:

Mostly short trips so run cold and on choke does not give great fuel economy with choke on.

Non standard tyre size will hurt fuel economy beyond speedo error..

Car is noticably running rich (probably due to free flowing exhaust and extractors so overall minimal change form stock).

Live in hilly area (the gap).

Lead foot.

Evaporation form car that is rarely used - probably took 4 weeks to achieve mileage.

Always drive with windows down (increased drag) but a/c off (minimal difference).

Overall I think it's representative of normal use of people here... maybe slightly high but you'd expect similar with male drivers and some mods.

Definately have more than doubled my fuel consumption from Vit with 31"s.

Stuff worth considering if you're tight for a budget at least. I'd love to LPG it, but dont do enough miles to really justify the cost at this stage.
