Clutch or electric fan ??

i got a 2.8 diesel lux and wen i put my dual cases in i want 2 lift the transfercase up as high as p[ossible but i think this will make my fan hit the radiator, the question is do i move the rad so it dont hit or do i take the factory clutch fan off and run an electric one ??

personal option !!!!
1. you always know your clutch fan is there , working(most of the time !!!)
2. electric fan , more engine power !! only minimal !!!

yeah but if i have a temp gauge will know wen the fan aint wokin

I run thermo's on my RR. Ex EL Falcon.
No problems to date.

If you have a good cooling system then thremos will be fine.

the main thing is to is make sure the fans have a good shroud that fits the radiator core. Air flow is everything. Air passing through the whole rad.

Just fitting a couple of elec fans to the rad wil not work efficently.

Ive seen a Hilux break an engine mount and destroy it's clutch fan by stuffing it into the shroud.

Ive just converted my 40 from clutch fan to twin electrics. I picked up two standard Nippon Denso/Motorcraft fan and shroud assemblies from a wrecker for $50. These things came out on '80s front wheel drive Mazdas and Hondas, and are as common as muck.

I made one shoud out of the two, which took a little effort, but these things suck harder that BJs Mum. There a few gaps I need to fill around the edge of the shroud to bump up the efficiency, but they cool my Chevy very well. I wired them up with a Davies, Craig Thermo switch and power relay kit ($70). I have a three position switch on my dash so I can select on, off or thermo. People complain about sealing the thermo sensor, but I used two hose clamps and a small amount of RTV and no leaks to date.

I'll post up pics when I have time.

unless your going through water...adequately sized thermos should be more than good..they should be great mate

Thermo switch kit. Pretty good kit as far as auto wiring kits go. I used every last bit in the packet and only need a couple of extra bits and pieces to complete the install.

Watch out for the clutch ones if you spend time in the water, I've seen quite a few bend when entering the water and cut a nasty hole in the radiator :(

Go the twin thermos off AU Falcon. I had sh!tloads of overheating dramas with my ute when I first got it up and running. These things are awesome, and are very slimline if you don't have a lot of room to play with. With the fans going, I can walk past the front of my ute and it will suck a rag into the grill from about 2 1/2 feet away.

Got mine for $150 from a wrecker here in Brisbane. Though, I've since been told that's a pretty good price. Definately worth the $$$. Easy to fit too. They have a wedge system on the bottom, and just two bolts on the top.

ive got a 13 inch thermo fan running in my 83' lux. i changed cause the fan kept flexing into the radiator cause its too close, also the fan has seized. not only is it wired on a thermostat but ive wired an override switch if i notice the temp shoot. no probs so far.
works the trick

I have one of these kits and in my opinion they are crap, anyone that has been out hard wheelin with me knows my thermo always plays up when i do. wether it bounces out of setting or bad/dirty contacts in mechanism or what i dont know. I am in the middle of figuring out a way to use my original temp sensor to activate fan at a pre determined temp, or will just go with a different temp sensor/switch setup when i find one.

also I have had the thermo blade ride into the rad b4 because the circlip vibrated off, no big mess just a few bent fins.

Running standard 45 series Landcruiser petrol (2F) radiator.

For thermo switches:
VDO make a 92 deg switch for installing into a water jacket
American auto parts have the thermistor type that push imbetween the fins of your rad, 200 F, non adjustable.

Both these are heaps better than the $*%$ davies craig things that turn on when its foggy never mind dunking them.
The one from AAP is sealed and will handle 30 amps, VDO one is just like a temp sensor in size and construction but will only handle 10 amps so youll need a relay too.

I can scratch up part# if you need em.
