Endless air using a vain type compressor.
Has anyone used a vain style of aircon pump as an on board air . I know they used to be used on early planes to pressurise the cabins but will they be any good for this purpose.

was not aware that there was such a thing as a vane type air conditioner compressor? Ir cond pumps tend to be a conventional piston/cylinder setup (boxy york units with 2 inline cylinders) or swash plate type with 3 or 5 bores each containing a double ended piston making 6 or 10 compression chambers respectively. I think vane type are more suited to high volume, low/moderate pressure applications (unless you go to a sarich type with fully supported vanes); exhaust air injection compressors are usually vane type compressors, maybe one of them would do the job. would be ok for air-up I think - to 30psi sort of thing, but not real good for lockers, air tools etc -attempts at high pressures from one of these would cause bendage of the vanes leading to air bypassing the working seals.

I dont know, we got hydraulic pumps here at work that are vane style and give a good 2500psi with 70L/min flow, and they arent that big either.
I think if the particular vane pump started its life out as an air-con pump it should be suited to the required air flow and pressure that lockers and air tools would need.

All the Piston engine aircraft I work on use Vane type Vacuum/Pressure pumps for Instrument air. Its low pressure, high flow. They set them to about 6" Inches of pressure. Whats that in PSI, I cant remember.

6" of water gauge or 6" of Hg (mercury)?
Either way, not very high pressure (that is why they dont use psi or kPa). Atmospheric pressure is about 360" water.

Run the intake off a t-peice in the rocker cover breather, the oil fumes will lubricate it brilliantly.
Sam, i think most aircon systems run at 160psi plus. Dont quote me on that though.
