LOWERING HP
is there a way of lowering the hp/kw output of an engine in order to legally be able to drive it?
i'll soon be on my p's and down here in vic you can only drive a max of 125kw/tonne.
the 40series ive come across is a 350 on petrol..approx 400hp/295kw
ive heard you can limit the carby to decrease power.. is there any side effects in doing this??
and.. if i was to convert to gas does that lower the power output also?..ultimately im looking to run on gas anyway.
cheers

Re: LOWERING HP
how are you going to prove to Vicroads, and the bacon that its been detuned?
A dyno sheet "MAY" work, but you could de-tune it , then dyno it, the retune it again back to 400000hp...

I think you'll find, if they are in doubt they'll make you prove it anyway whether you have a dyno sheet or not. Either way, as a P plater it'll be too much power for your limited experience and will just get you in more trouble than you know what to do with. Hence the rule in the first place ...

Im here for the sausage!
sharns, not only that, thats alot of grunt in a lifted shorty.
chance of you tipping is high, handlign in a 40 isnt great.
and did planb tell you he is getting 295Kw or are you guessing?
Im tempted to call BS on the 295Kw. thats HEAPS!
they came out with 90 odd kilowatts, your more then trippling the power!
check with authorities on the regs.
thats the safe and sure answer.
i dont know how your CV joints will go if it does have 295Kw and you wheel it????

Are you sure it's 400HP?
In motors like this, 1hp per cubic inch are drag racing motors bordering on unuseable on the street.
1/2 a Hp per cube used to be a good street motor.
I probably fails any emmisions tests at the moment anyway, LPG would be the only way to go, detuned it will probably run like a pig as the cam is setup for this sort of HP.
You will also probably find that the HP happens up high in the revs and a stock 6cyl diesel will crap all over you for bottom end torque and offroad performance.
It will probably be an axle snapping, gearbox spitting nightmare and handle like a pig, with drum brakes that grip like greasy fish'n'chips.

Yep these sort of rules are meant to reduce the chances of inexperienced drivers being at the controls of missiles on wheels.
A 40 like this is probably a overpowered, bad handling missile with little facility for stopping, if they let it on the drag strip they'd probably make you fit a parachute to pull up.
Last thing anyone here wants is a 4WD like this on the news/ACA with a car full of dead kids wrapped around its bullbar.

cause bullbars are killers...
wow, theres actually some SENSIBLE replies in this thread..
Yes well the 4 post railway track specials fitted on a lot of 40/45 series certainly would prove this well.

I saw one of them mounted on a new playdoe round dande area bout 12 mths ago! ***** talk about not wanting to let go!
I saw a rounded late model polished alloy bar fitted to a 40 series once, bizarre, who say you can't put round pegs in square holes

what you do is put a restrictor underneath the baseplate of the carby. cut out a plate from sheet ally with a hole in the middle half the size of the origional baseplate hole. you will need a spacer between the carby and the restrictor for this to work..
OR just retard the ignition timing come dyno time, this will drop hp numbers dramatically.
OR the easyest way is to dissconnect the secondarys on the carby so they are inoperative..
maybe you are being optimistic with the hp of the engine to begin with, a new hsv has 290 odd KW...

400hp sounds a bit much to me
I am pretty sure that the authorities will only look at the manufacturers specs on the motor, not what its actually got due to engine mods. IE an old 350 would get about 250HP ?
I know in QLD at least that this is the case for engine swaps, you can drop a 350 in a cruiser aslong as its factory spec hp is within the spec of the engine swap, if you stroke it to a 400cube and pull 300kw out of it, it is still approved aslong as all the mods to the engine are legal.

Gotta tell ya, we all want quick, powerful cars when we first get our licenses, I was no different. Prob is, no matter how good you "think" you drive, as a new driver none of us ever really had the skill we thought we did. I couldn't tell you how many times I did stupid things in a car when I was younger, I'd hate to imagine what would have happened if it had the sort of power you're talking about!
Ultimately, you've gotta ask yourself, how bad do you really want to make it to the end of your P plates.
Now you're thinking, "what do they know. I'll be alright." Well it's up to you but when you buy it and post up 1 week later that you rolled it, I don't think you'll get much simpathy. That's if you're alive to post up ...
As a foot note, I remember one example of a bloke on this board who got his license and rolled his car doing donuts in a carpark on the way home from his test (or something like that, very soon after anyway). And I recall it was farily gutless too, probably the reason why he was able to post up still ...

i told planb i couldnt drive a high powered vehcile so i dont see y he would try talk it up.. he says it puts out 400hp..i just roughly assumed the kw.
Also consider how many litres of fuel are going to cascade down the secondaries of this monster, it's no fun if you can't use it because it costs you $20 a day to get to work.
You hit something solid in an old beast like this you are going to get hurt.

yeah i see ya point and to be honest im not after grunt.
im after a decent 40. unfortunately for me ..most that have had money spent on them will have a v8 in them.
id b happy with a stock eng less all the ks and the massive fuel consumption..so im looking for a 40 with a few mods. newer eng on gas..auto gearbox etc
thanks for ya help anyways

What price range you looking at?
Maybe a 40 isn't the best for a first car.
Nothing wrong with a Sierra or Hilux, you probably even get a 1980's Patrol or Landcruiser for the same price as a 1970's V8 40 Series
Shorty MQ Patrol? Top is removeable, very capable offroad, front disc brakes, reliable and you can drop a V8 in later.
The later model it is the less trouble it will give you, easier for parts and cheaper to run.
You are looking at the second oldest series Landcruiser, 55's are near non existant, 40 series no aftermarket support anymore, even 60 series parts are getting rare, only good thing is near everyone with one is getting rid of them, so plenty of second hand parts for a few years, MQ is similar basket, you can pick up a running rollover/rust bucket for $1000 just for parts.

pcman wrote:heres a great idea we can swap the 350 into my 40 and you can take the 2f till you get off your p's
I was thinking similar, but what about an engine swap, if that donk DOES put out them amount of neddies, Im sure it would sell fuckin piss easy.. then get somethin decent to throw in it, a 1HZ or something
Ask Cheezy what his Mav donk puts out . its a 383.. he knows his shit with donks he builds his own, and used to drag race a bit.. he would know if the KW is there
some of these posts are giving horrendous advice
Look sunshine, you have a 350 chev in a 40, this is by NO means a speed demon of a vehicle...
these are a tough and safe vehicle, and are much better for on road dynamics( read much safer) than a lifteed zook or hilux.
if you find its too powerful, just disconnect the secondarys in teh carby
Better still, but on a 2 barrel holley 350 and be done with it...
easyest way to limit horsepower is undercarburate it. END of story!
will cost you at most 100 bucks for the holley!
Cheers,
Jes
