I can't get a recent pic , but its basically an alloy checker plate shield, now with cement sheet (fibro, whatever)added to it ...its bolted to the underside floor and partially up the firewall with spacers for an air gap.
I ain't got any older pix either, never thought anyone would want to see it :)
the trick is to create an air gap between exhaust and the floor with a sheet of something heat proofish.
Sierras have them standard, mine does anyway, but probably need more with extractor heat.
mine gets warm enuff to heat my luch, and/or make my drinks too warm..christover

so what was needed to get the engine certified, obviously all the work had to be done well but what things needed to be changed/upgraded for it to be legal?

there is many, many pages of guff on the eng report.

thicknesses of steel used for mounts, crossmembers etc was all measured, and the shapes etc were inspected..

clearances of all parts from each other (had to 15mm gap I think)

the main part is the driving tests.
braking, steering, swerving all had to be up to a certain standard.

parts used from other vehicles, ie disc rear, engine mounts etc, had to be from a similar weight and spec vehicle.

all pollution gear from the new engine had to be fitted, and engine needed to be approved import, ie had been passed for pollution in aus.
or the info had to be gathered or measured (at great expense)
this engine was available in cars imported legally here.

the main thing was, he talked with the engineer about all mods before he did any work on it.
this is the best avenue, as you know up front what you can/can't do.

As the 3/4 rear was never available on any factory vehicle, it was not approved for on road use, unless locked out...then it was same as standard.

the quality of all the work was inspected, as you knew.

Engineers comment was "don't try to re-invent the wheel"
ie keep using off the shelf auto parts with no mods on them.

there was much, much more and I don't really know all those details.

latest news.
front anti-inversion shackles made, and longer rear shackles ready, to be fitted after paint dries.
Sorry no pix, didn't remember camera :oops:
But they are pretty much what you'd expect.
rear ones made from channel, but ground down to look like standard ones, very cool.
front are cut from steel plate, in the standard 3 sided look, like standard on some trucks.
Will wait till a few jobs done, then more pix to come.

Even though the auto has tamed the power of this beast a little, it
still launches itself very well..... you have to be very delicate with
the throttle.
Still no testing done with 3/4 rear activated, yet.
Still no rear lock, though you wouldn't know it, drives the wheels down
nicely.

Thanks for keeping us posted with this rig Christover. It's real cool how capable it looks without looking like a monster truck either, theres obviously been a lot of thought put into it's design. :cool:

Sure was, but in my short drive, I only used first gear, and the first 4 - 5mm of accelerator travel, so I not sure what the rest is for :D

He was doing a reverse spin around, getting the front into position, to climb out of a viscious and very wet spoon drain.
But hidden in the soft earth of the bank was a not so soft tree root/stump.
Made a loud noise.

Just got back from his shed, he's just about beaten out all the dent, filling and painting tomorrow, you will never know it was there.....vanity :D

sorry, i don't know the story on thsi sammy, but did you say SR20?!?!? from what pics i've seen its looks to be true. my heart skiped a beat when i read this subject. is there another thread about the engine???

The thread link below was the start of project, but it lost its pictures after some site problems, so I started another.. Yes it is a sr20de non turbo around 120kw with 4speed auto, and many off road improvements.

Custom made Jack shaft from output of auto to the standard Sierra/Sammy transfer case, though its in a custom position.. It is a LWB so plenty of room.

I have a million pix of the build, can't put em all up, but if asked for specific issues, I can put up some of them.

At last some cutting work is underway, to fit some real rubber to the mighty SR20DE powered beast.
32 x 10:50 simex ET's.
Rear didn't need much more than flattening out the ridges.
Front has major cutting to the headlight bucket area.
Also the lip rounded section of the inner guard is being cut out,
allowing for a flatter inner guard.
And a little trimming back of the firewall area is mostly done.
Will be welded up all pretty another day,
and finished off with bitchumen/tar/body deadener type paint..
Very little extension to the bump stops will be needed,
maybe 20mm ish.
Pix can wait till its wearing the rubber propereley.
This is an awesome machine already,
wearing this rubber should get it even more capable.
Gearing in t-case and/or diffs will be decided upon after driving it
fer a while.

centipedes in a 31x10.5 are around the $320 mark each... but thats quoted by opposite lock, if you can find someone else who stocks them i reckon you'd get a better price.

Why do you need a 10 or 11.5????

Explain the reason behind this one. I have seen 9.5in tyres on zooks over the last couple of years and they have worked very well....

a skinnier tyre on a lighter vehicle is going to have more grip than a fat tyre anyday - cos more weight is on a smaller surface area. that and theyre simex's - theyve got bite!

32 x 9:50's would have been his preferred option, but a good deal was found with the 32 x 10:50's.
I believe it will handle the extra width without a huge difference.
But the extra clearancing/cutting/bfg work to fit that extra width is quite a lot more than you'd think.

Looked good when i seen it main thing i was in ore of was the rear suspension it looked mad Well done Joey looks good.
