Swivel Hub Bearings

Post by Slug »

Just pulled the last 2 shims on my swivel hubs to stop the wheel shake problem. Of course this means that sooner rather than later I have to replace the damn things :bad-words:

I noticed theres a minor oil leak each side (bottom) after removing the last shim so I am assuming theres an axle seal in there as well ? Does someone actually make a "kit" to replace bearings and seals in total each side or is a bits from here etc kinda thing ? I live an hours drive from Katherine NT and even then its unlikely Repco etc would have what I need in stock.

Anyone thats done it offer any advice or would I be better paying someone to do the job ?

Cheers
Daniel

Anyone know what comes in the kit, is it complete with bearing and all seals or is there others parts I may need ?
I will more likely need all the seals and crap before I start because once I rip it to bits its a bloody long walk to Darwin :D

Lat one I did was a Toyota & it came with everything requiresd to replace the seals and bearings in the swivel hub, another thought, is there a bearing shop in Katherine as CBC bearings do the kit cheaper than Repco.

I'm in the same boat - having no shims left.

How much does the kit cost?

How hard is it to pull hte old bearings off?

Quote from CBC Bearings as suggested.... 201 bucks for both sides, includes bearing and seals! About 200 less than I expected :)

I think some guys put thinner or thicker ones in(available from Nissan) to take up play in their Kingpins but my understanding with Landrover ones is that they are there to give proper pre-load to steering. I just replaced every bearing and seal in the front end and one of the improvements is that my shimmy at 70k has gone. Patrol sits on the driveway now with not a drop of oil from anywhere unlike my f****n Landy!

What you are supposed to do is set them to a certain preload. Fit the bearings & the shims, the hub should be disconnected to from the steering tie rod end. There is a special tool which looks a bit like the scales you weigh your fish with, you get this tool & measure the force it takes to move the swivel hub, there will be specs in the workshop manual. Add/remove shims to get the right reading, if you dont then the bearings will chop out.

Thats the easiest way I can think to describe it to you, the procedures should be in a workshop manual to help you.

Dead Right, we keep flogging them at everything, even the rugby now its great :D

The Japs showed up the poms the best with the Honda CB750 Four, people flocked to it because it started first go, didnt leak oil & actually stopped when you jumped on the brakes!!!

Do Sameday freight still run Darwin to Katherine every day, you should be able to get your parts dropped off at the servo any day of the week.
would not matter if you bought the parts in Darwin or Katherine..
