Are Cooper ST's any good?
Been thinking of replacing my BFG ATs , With Cooper ST's. But have read some bad posts ,as well as good ones. I feel the BFG's are becoming very dated. So please vote, even if you dont own any.

I drive a SWB NA Pajero, and I run a set of Cooper Discoverer ST 31x10.5 r15's on it (this is my second set), and my previous set did 117,000 before I decided to replace them (they had about 10-15,000k's left on the tread). I'm not necessarily a hardcore 4WDer, but I love to challenge myself on difficult terrains often, and my discoverer's haven't let me down ever! Basically, to sum it up, I say, yes they're good.

I had 31x10-5/15 S/Ts on my Paj for about 40 000 km. Off road I thought they were very good, on road noise wasn't a problem. I've still got them in the shed if anybody's interested.
I only got rid of them to go larger, and ended up with MT/Rs, because they were available s/h at a good price. I don't think the MT/Rs were significantly better than the S/Ts off road.
I recently replaced the MT/Rs, and went back to Coopers - the new STT.
I say go for it.

Definately have a go at these tyres, you may pay a little more but the mileage you get on them makes them the cheapest in the end. I run 31 x 10.5 x 15 on my Triton, given them a flogging for 40 thousand k's and I will get at least another 40 by the amount of wear so far. Even in the mud traction is quite good. Would have a look at the new stt pattern as well.
A mate has just clocked over 80000kms on them in his LWD and they look bloody brillant. He's says he wont buy anything else and I trust his opinions as a rule of thumb. I'll be gettin a set for the Io when I need new tyres, which wont be long by the way I'm doing kms and using tyres.

We are fitting ST's in fortnight to the jabber, So i reckon they are good
From looking at pretty much every AT and MT, Ive come to the conclusion that ST are the top of the hill for outback travelling and around town comuting. Weather they live up to it is another question...
Just remember all tyres can suffer punctures, ripped tread blocks etc etc, no tyre is invincible, so choose what feels right for your needs.

I had one set of 31x11.50 STT they were very good, on road a little noise but can live with that, off road excellent tire

Got ST's on my XJ and they bag ,clean,grip well on all surfaces BTW you dont need a sub to drown out the road noise either.
Lockers or Knockers ,both will make for fun.

A little care might be in order with this purchase.
The ST tyres are known to be great road tyres, but if you go on rocky or gibber strewn tracks/roads they will chip and tear off blocks.
Cooper have brought out the ST/C for people who drive on roads likely to tear the ST tyres and this new tyre is much better for those conditions, but not quite as good on the bitumen.
So - if you drive a lot on rough roads get the ST/C otherwise try the ST. The ST/C is only available in a small range of sizes though.

The "tearing off blocks" normally happened to people (such as OL members ) using them for rock-climbing, an application for which Cooper recommend the STTs. I'm not aware of blocks being removed under touring conditions.
The points about S/T vs ST/C are completely valid - last I looked I think the ST/C was only available in 3 sizes.

Oh! Been spotted have I?
Well, it is true that the worst examples of torn off lugs were caused by attacking some of the rougher tracks at LCMP and through places like Sundown NP, but they don't really qualify as rock crawling.
The chipping and SOME of the torn off lugs were simply rough roads.

Twas me who sliced the sidewall of my 31x10.5x15 ST's at Sundown NP with Joe and co., but due to me not airing down not the tyres, as it stayed up till I got home (changed to the spare in the NP as precaution).
Have chipped the odd corner block due to rock climbing, etc. otherwise cannot fault them.

Just back from a month in the kimberley along the Gibb River Road and its off shoots. Well we fitted cooper ST's for this trip and they were fantastic. Only the slightest amount of chipping which occured to almost every tyre that went on the holiday. The chips will eventually wear down even with the rest of the tread anyway.
The only real concern would be that brand new they had 15mm of tread, and now after 10,000km they have 11mm on the rear and 12mm on the front. So unless the compound gets harder the further it wears, then I dont think they will make the advertised 80,000km. But hey, they did everything I could ask of them to do, and when the time comes I will fit them again.
For comparisons sake, 2 cars were fitted with BFG muds, 2 cars were fitted with BFG AT of which one vehicle had a shreaded sidewall (tyres were on there last legs in the first place, so hard to fault them otherwise) 1 car was fitted with Desert Duellers of which one was shreaded with only 2500km on it :( 2 cars were fitted with Hankook RF04 and another was fitted with RA09 (new AT) which copped a screw threw the tread in the middle of no where, last but not least, ours on the ST's.

Well, we now have New STTs fitted. 2 days old. I can hear some extra road noise, but only if I turn the radio off and listen carfully. And the Wife likes their wet road (tar) grip. So far alls good.
