Can anyone help?? :S

Post by kranked_dirt »

G'day guys,

As above i need some help, i have just spent the last 2 hours trying to work this out.. am i missing something obvious or am i just plain stupid :S

heres the problem...

I have clearance lights around the truck set up like the diagram down the bottom. They are wired through a relay which is running from the parker circuit. I went to switch them on, parkers come on, no clearance lights. (no bulbs are blown) Measured with the multimeter the output of the relay and got 0v when switched on. Disconnected the lead from the relay to the clearance lights and then got 12.06v at the relay, connect it back up, 0v again. Disconnected all the +ve wires from all the lights and then got readings of 12.06v at every +ve wire. Went back to the fist light in the chain, connected the cradle back up with NO bulb in it and get 12.06v across the terminals. Put the bulb back and no light and 0v reading. :bad-words: :bad-words: :!: :!:

Can anyone help me or is it all f**ked, i only rewired this 2 months ago, dont want to have to do it again :?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Adam

10 minutes later and now the battery is reading 12.06v and the voltage across the terminals of all lights is between 8.5v and 9.6v. Also they stopped working suddenly, as in i parked the truck for 30min got back in and they're not working :bad-words: ... this is going to be a long night...

I would remove the +ve or ground (whichever's easier) from all the lights and then reconnect them one at a time while they are meant to be switched on. See what happens.

A couple of possibilities:

- your wire is too flimsy for that much current
- you've got something connected wrongly or shorting out at one of the lights
- the relay itself is wired wrong, can you give us a diagram/description of how you've wired it in?
- the relay is burned out, try just connecting the wires by hand without the relay in between
- you have a baaaaad connection that's carrying enough current to give 12V to your multimeter, but that dies when you try to run an actual light

i only rewired this 2 months ago, dont want to have to do it again

Do you mean this all used to work and has stopped working, or that you've just added new wiring?

Check the wiring after the relay to see if it is damaged at all. Keep checking down the line to see where the power stops and That section should be the problem. If you've been wheelin then you may have just damaged the wire.

I'm with the chimp - you've got a very bad connection somewhere, which conducts just enough to show you 12V on the multimeter, but won't carry enough current to energise the lights.

Check all your connections.

Yeah this all used to work, never had a problem. Went wheeling about 2 weeks ago, all was fine when i got back except 1 wire had been pulled out. However since they are all in paralell ( i cnat speel  ) only that one light went out. Re-connected the wire and all was sweet. Then like i said i just turned the ignition off for 30min and they wouldnt come back on :bad-words:
