2.8 Diesel?

Post by ISUZUROVER »

Hi All. I am thinking of putting a 4JB1T engine (Jackaroo/Rodeo 2.8 TD) engine in one of my Land Rovers (the other one has a factory ISUZU 4BD1).

I know the engines are pretty reliable and long lived, but has anyone seen many around at wreckers and does anyone have any idea of price?

Also, what year models of rodeo and jackaroo were they fitted to, what is the redline rpm, and are there any models that were better than others).

I think they were fitted from about 1988-2000 for the Rodeo. The Jackaroo got the 3.0 litre when it changed shape to the curvyish shape.

Either way the 3.0 litre ones are the ones with the bonnet scoop for the intercooler (on the Rodeo at least).

Try 'All Four x Four Parts' Warrego Hwy, Minden, Qld (07) 5426 8365

They're great for Isuzu parts. They have heaps of old Jackaroos, newer Jackaroos and older Rodeos. So they should have plenty of 2.8 t/d motors unless they have sold them all.

Good prices too.

Mate you need to pop over for a test drive and a beer! They originated in '87 and depending which country you are in are still put in new vehicles (asian market has no demand for common rail electronics). Actaully

mbs4x4

Import the new 2.8's to the UK for a conversion to replace the newer 3 lts in Isuzu Troopers (Holden Jackeroo)- what's that tell you? Other than for passenger vehiclur use they are also used for stationary power supplies and in the US in fork lifts!

They are spec'ed to red line at 4500-4700RPM, Power 74@3800 (kW/RPM) Torque 225@2300 (Nm/RPM), and are a responsive little engine (for a diesel).

There are slight differences, most notably is the intake manifold and most important is some have a timing chain (australian version) and others a timing belt.

Has got to be a number of them kicking around australia but not sure on prices. For comparison I picked up mine with ZF auto and LT230 for £895 (AU$2200) and commonly see them sold for under £400 here in the UK.

I am sure I can dig out more info, but as I say we will have to catch up for a beer. Oh and if you head over this way you can help me fit my new bulkhead I collected today.............................. ;)

The 2.8td was in Rodeos from 1990 to the current RA model that was introduced in 2002ish when it went to the 3.0td.

In Jackaroos it went from 1988 to 1992 when the 3.1td came in.

Was also in some of the earlier MUs.

JackEroo World seems to have the 2.8td "on sale" at the moment so maybe check that out...

The Rodeo ditched the 2.8 in favour of the 3.0 in the last shape. They are the ones you see with the bonnet scoop over the top mounted intercooler.

The 2.8 was still sold along side the 3.0 in the last shape Rodeos, but it was only available in certain combinations...

Oh.................perhaps only 2wd models? I don't think I ever saw a bonnet scoop on a 2wd model.

Thanks for all the replies, interesting info. Yes I will have to drop over for a beer Sheldon, maybe some time early next year...

I think once I fit 36" tyres to the IIA it will need some more power (and torque). The 4JB1T coupled to an R380 or a ZF sounds like it would be good.

GoRodeoGo is right i own one and its a 4x4 plus they were in 2wd aswell but what has bonnet scoop got to do with 2.8s anyway they were put on the 3.0s cause of the top mount intercooler been on jackaroos longer than rodeos :D

That is what I said, the 3.0 litre is distinguishable from the 2.8 as the 3.0 has the top mount intercooler (as opposed to no intercooler) so it has the bonnet scoop.

Is yours a single cab? I don't believe I have ever seen a 3.0 single cab. I always just assumed that the 2.8 was ditched altogether when the 3.0 was released however it is quite obvious now it wasn't.

I think Jackaroos got the 3.1 engine when it went to the new shape. So they would have had the bonnet scoop since early 90s.

Does anyone have any specs on the gearbox behind the 2.8?

Model number, ratios, and how strong and reliable???

According to my 1997 Rodeo owner's manual:

Manual gearbox is the same whether it is for the 2.8 diesel or the 2.6 or 3.2 petrol.

Type: MUA5C

1st 3.767
2nd 2.248
3rd 1.404
4th 1.000
5th 0.809
Rev 3.873

High 1.000
Low 2.051

Basically the same gearbox is in the Jackaroo also except interestingly the Jack (92 model) has a 2.28:1 low range t-case. The gearbox ratios are the same though...
Seem to be strong units. Mine's still going strong after 12 years and 178,000kms.

I guess that means I shouldn't be needing to rebuild my gearbox anytime soon with only 150k behind a 2.6L 4 cyl petrol.

Just fixing my mistake, I think in Australia Jackeroos have the chain and rodeos have the belt. Anyone that owns one can confirm?

2.8td ie 4JB1 $3500 to $7500 depending on kms etc. Had to put one in 6months ago after the idler gear sheared off the crank!!! apparently quite common. 3ltr based on the same block etc and more problems in those than 2.8. have heard of warranty on timing case failure (obvious end resualt) after only 20 - 30 k kms. That said, the 180k i put on the 2.8 was smooth and trouble free until the idler gear thing. Holden didn't want to know. bent all the rods etc and some botom end damage.

Hi ISUZUROVER, have you carried out the 4JB1T engine conversion? I am currently thinking ot buying a 4JB1TC+ gearbox for my landrover, and I wish to hear some comments about these engines in rovers.
Also, do you have any idea of what year it may be? (it has a top mounted intercooler, which is surrounded with a silver frame.)
And what are the diff ratios this engine is coupled to? Ibelieve rovers have 3.5:1 diffs.

Ya....the isuzu MU had the following

up till 1993 model - 4JB1-T - Rodeo 2.8 turbo dielse
1993 model onwards - 4GJ2 - Jackeroo 3.1 turbo Diesel

There was also the 2.6 Petrol...in the petrol models.

If I where you I would probably put the 3.1 in....
