information on gearbox stealing oil from xfer case on 40 ser

hey people, any help would be good thanks.

my gearbox keeps taking the oil from my xfer case i believe... apparently it is a problem that alot of 40's have? its a 5speed yoto box... there is apparently a pipe that you can buy that will level out the oil in both the gear box and the transfer case? has anyone tried these? are they worth it? or should i just keep changing the oil more regularly? the only thing is tho i only changted the oil not all that long ago?

and also... is the rear output shaft seal hard to change on a xfer case? i'm leaking!

Just fit the equalizer pipe it's quick and easy to do.

I fitted one of these to my HJ60 when i had it has the same problem and have also fitted one to my Hilux ,cost me about $50 for each kit i think.Should be able to buy from your local shop (Hilux 1 i have now is piranna i think)

had the same problem.. when i took it in there was only about 1lt of oil left out of about 9lt's i think..

I got it done properly for about $1750.. full transfer rebuild with new rear seal, rear bearings, etc..

no leaks so far thank god and no issues with it since..

Hi all...Tucka,I had the same problem once.the bypass goes from the fill plug of the transfere to the fill plug of the gearbox.The plugs have a nipple on them,connect with a hose.Any decent 4x4 shop should have them.

you could just make up your own.

drill and tap the filler plugs and fit some hose connections, 300mm of 10mm PVC pipe and 2 hose clamps and your done. maybe $10 in parts if yuou get ripped off, and about 1hr?

Even after having spent this money i would fit a Transfer hose. It is realy common for the cruiser Transfer to feed its oil into the gearbox and its realy cheap insurance. Without one you could quite easily be up for another $1750 re-build in no time.

and here I was thinking I did the right thing from what I've read it does seem to happen every 100,000km's or so i think but now at least i know when it was last done now as I had nfi before.

frp, thats what i was going to say. it was 6-8months back i think.

was a handy article i just gotta get of fmy a$$ and go get a kit.
seems like cheap insurance. i have noticed mine does it too.

If you fit the seal from a HZJ75 1990 and later that seperates the gearbox from the transfer the problem is fixed they have a double lip seal with garter spring on both sides. Looks like 2 seals back to back. If mechanically minded should take about 4 hours, new seal ~$20.00 and oil for transfer and gear box. I alway's fit this seal as i run 80w90 oil in the transfer and 75w80 in the gear box so they shift heaps better especially when cold. Because i use different oils the seal had to work.
