GQ into 80
I've cracked it with the standard 80 front end and am now going to get a GQ one shoe horned in.
Anyone done it? anything to look out for? Anything make it seriously stoopid..? like odd angles etc?? I don't have the $$$ to go GU so restrict the mentions of those!!!
also thinking of sliding in an LSD in the front - anyone done that too?

hes running the hipinion both end now
with a 355 stroker in a 4door rangie
holds up well to 37'' mtr
id normaly say check forsale section but thats no go now
the GQ lsd would have to be the beast factory unit
how much you asking for your old 80s diff assembly ??
is it the constant 4x4 diff

Hmmm - well, yeah - It'll be a modified rear LSD in teh front - and I'm only going to swap the front end over - teh rear 80 a$$ is fine and holding up well.
I'll have to figure what I want for the front end now - I have a mate chasing the lot up... But only the front being done.
I'm not really keen on mega mods - but does anyone have any ideas on what the go will be? I also know I'm becoming a super Tojo wh0re as I will have a nissan bit in the 80...!

Yeah when I had my mate GU cv's out i compared it to one of my 80 oes and the GU ones are only slightly bigger...
Car went down last night.... I selected my new diff from the inventory and happened onto a strengthened housing... Will get pics next week as i'm trying to make sure I'm there for the buildup. I get to keep the twin shock setup - just a matter of remounting the plates for the Control arms and the panhard now... Woo hoo!!! Booty fab'd front driveshaft to come.
Looking forward to it though - should be right by mums day... yay!
Anyways. I'll post pics when I can. Best part will be - 9" front diff..
My 80 diff for the record is setup with twin shock mounts, pre drilled caster correction to suit 3" lift and re set Panhard mount to retain stock Yota panhard rod and compensate for the 3" lift. been setup to suit budget. Has recent brake overhaul and new bearings seals throughout.
It'll go up in the appropriate For Sale section once it comes out. PM me only for info. Cheers!

Geez Paulo get off the crack!
You were there in front of Wally's car when he was telling us about his GQ conversion!
Seeing as your front diff has held up to lots of abuse with 35's and 37's why not just pay off those complete 80 series axles with factory lockers and be done with it?
With the GQ setup you'll have something completely original and a p.i.a to repair WHEN u do break something!
If you've got the money to do a GQ conversion, you've got the money for a standard 80 series locker, either factory or ARB.
Besides the R&P being in a high pinion setup, there wouldn't be much strenghth differences between the 80 or the GQ front end anyway.
Look at what the Hilux guys do with their cars!
My 2c chucked in for f**k all!

awwwww fcuk.

now I figure it out. Waiting for Wallys PM and some booty fab info.
Dave - my front diff has done over 300,000 and its better not to let it go bang. But I wont be installing the LSD, or a locker in the front just yet.
there's another option happening soon enough.
I just bought a winch(dan) and will buy a rear locker. punk - stop posting when you're on the sauce.

How did u know?

Seriously, go Wally's option if anything at all. It'll work better in the long run than a whole GQ diff.
How would the brakes on the GQ axle's work with in the 80?
Technically it would have to be engineered too, whereas a GQ centre in the 80 housing wouldn't.
Well the first update...
Had the old diff out, measured up and mated - the control arms have been fabbed out 30mm in each side so they got chopped off and relocated.
Panhard setup, sussing out the spring perch, the shocks match up...
Brake line, and tailshaft to get the booty fab treatment... Yay!
anyone got a deal on CV's - I figure I might buy a set just in case..
Thread will be un useless tomorrow as I will be taking pics tonight!! Got my Grimace camera working again... choice. Pc Man where r u to host???
oh and reloacting some batteries as well if I can get motivated!! make room for I/cooler...

Rightyo,
All finito now. will get ****Bling pics***** when light permits and I remember to wash it!!
One very, very tough front end. mega lamination done - angle protections across breadth, Swivel balls reinforced, super wrapped, bracinging in arms, retained the 80 arms, kept the steering geometry of the 80 so very light on the wheel now(moved batteries behind my bum now).
Very tidy and supper toughened setup - the tailshaft looks factory, the plating on the diff is ultra tough and the bill was within the budget too boot.
Pics will be available soon - just have get my diff breather replumbed and i'll shoot away!! Very happy with Sandy and Thommo at AUS4WD for the work done and the turnaround and trouble shooting.
