Loading up cold winch motors

Post by ludacris »

What is likly to happen if you free spool out then winch in loading up a cold winch motor. :?

27 winch motors all up burnt out in the last NZ winch challenge.

What do you guys think.

i don't think that cold weather would really have anything to do it unless it was really cold causing ice to form then melting when in use and causing it to short out

so i rekon it has to do with moisture in the motor

Cris,
Most of the problem is that Beven Butler and Wormy were running 24 volt through their 12 volt winch motors. Extremely fast line speed, but they don't last too long like that.

Kym had electrical problems for the first few days and was chewing through winch motors for that reason. Once it was fixed, he didn't use too many more.

Most of the kiwi's running 8274's, used perhaps 2 winch motors each, which is about normal.

But also, the terrain was alot tougher than previous years....with trucks having to winch downhill on some stages because the mud was so deep and thick. The boys with well setup and maintained PTO's or hydraulic winches were fine.

Cheers

Cheers for that GQ TROL. That makes a lot more sence. It was just hard to understand Kym Bolton burning out so many motors and droping the highmount for a PTO driuven Hydrolic winch when there are people over here that have opened up there 6hp 12volt motors and fixed the 24volt problems and going strong.

I have noticed that some of those PTO and Hydrolic winches are very fast and reliable but what sort of dollars are spent on those systems.

For instance Kym Bolton has supposedly spent $20 000 on his new set up but is apparently pulling it out to start again as it is not funtioning as it should be.

Are any off the systems of the shelf or are they custom.

We are currently building up another comp Truck SWB GQ and are looking at cost effective ideas.

P.s I am deffinatly grabbing one of those 7.8hp 12 or 24 volt motors from over your way for my truck. :D

Hydraulic setups can be very expensive......and its a shame Kym is still having dramas with his new hydraulic, as it should be up and running fine by now, I'm guessing thats why he's co-driving for Wormy in the OBC??

Grant Guy in Wellington and Michael Whyte in Masterton probably had the two best setup Superwinch hydraulic winches in the country. Grant's cost alot, but was setup by a hydraulics expert, with no expense spared in quality materials. Michael has removed his and is replacing his with a hydraulic powered 8274 (mid mounted). PTO provides the drive for hydraulic pump for both. 8274 will give a faster line speed....about 60m per second or so!!

It pays to get a reputable hydraulics engineer to design it all, using a Superwinch hydraulic winch, for simplicity. Michael only had a 35 litre tank which limited him to only 5 mins of continuous winching.....so he drives like an animal to compensate.....its horses for courses ;) .

Cost effective?? For us, we're using a Nissan PTO winch, with larger outer diameter spool for increased capacity (35-40m of 11 or 12mm plasma), and larger diameter inner spool, so the winch speed is matched to driving speed. Then you can winch and drive without over-running the winch. Replace shear pins with high-tensile bolts and learn to read your winch. When it eventually goes bang, its likely you will destroy the PTO output, probably by taking a tooth off the lay-shaft. Get yourself some spare worm gears, and bronze worm wheel. The worm wheel chews out after excessive use.....but thems the breaks.

Those 7.8HP Superduty motors certainly look the goods....I think Ateco is hopefully picking up distribution of them in AU??

Cheers
