When designing gears it is necessary to evaluate for both wear and strength (2 similar but different formulae).

The strength formula determines the fatigue strength of the gear tooth, in bending as a cantilever. But it depends upon how many teeth are in mesh at ant one time, as to how much of the tangential load is applied to a gear tooth.

Many spur gears (depending on number of teeth in the gear and the pinion) will have 2 teeth in mesh. The tangential tooth load for helical gears is less than spur gears, because more teeth share the tangential load at any time.

The pressure angle of the gear teeth is an important factor for tooth strength. Pressure angle is the angle between the tangent line at the pitch circle and the direction of the normal to the tooth surface where the mating teeth contact. Generally PA is 20 deg these days, but 25 is not uncommon for high strength.

As the pressure angle increases, the tooth becomes thicker at the root and thinner at the tip. This thickness at the root is an important factor for too strength.

Helical teeth cut using 20 deg normal PA cutters will have a 20 deg PA normal to the helix angle, but greater than 20 deg in the direction of the tangential tooth load.

Most gear noise is a result of inaccuracies in the tooth profile and the pitch, resulting in loss of congugate action (if 1 is rotating at constant speed the mating gear is continually speeding up, the slowing down). When teeth wear, this gets worse.

Helical teeth are quieter because more teeth in mesh at the same time, improves the congugate action.

Well within a month i should be able to tell you all how stropg the MD 49% kit is. I dropped my Intermediate shaft off to Mal today and will have the gearset back early next week. Will be competing in The Superior allterrain Challange on Queens Birthday Long Weekend which is more a High Speed Event but is real hard on drive train components. And then i have We-Rock a week later in Bathurst. The only concern i have is the Output shafts but Mal beleives these wont be a problem and if they are it should be no problem to upgrade them.

excellent.. so are you the first guinea pig besides himself (Mal)..

so I take it he has to modify the inter. shaft and does not supply new one..

He is doing 2 other sets at the same time as mine for other customers.

Yes the inter shaft needs to be modified. If it were a complete new shaft it would be a lot more expensive.

Got the gears set back on Tuesday. This is some Quality work.

Got them all fitted in the case today and should have them in the buggy by tomorrow. But i still wont be able to realy drive it for another week or so as i have more work to do before its drivable again.

The gear does fit into the case but has to be fitted through the inspection cover. It doesnt fit out through the case like the original. It comes with instal instruction that even Anthony P could maybe understand. Yes a fair bit of grinding is involved but it doesnt take that long to do. I used a 4" angle grinder with an Alloy Cutting Blade on it but you can use a normal Cutting disc.

Mal now has these ready to go. You just need to supply your intermediate gear to be modified.
