Since I have rotated the diff (by longer upper arms) to point the pinion higher to eliminate angles and bad vibes, the pinion bearing is starting to growl a fair bit.
I have this week added more oil to try to keep the pinion bearing lubed up and have added some Molybond for good measure buts its too late for the bearing so I have a couple q's,
1: How hard is it to replace the pinion bearing (i cant remember if they come out from the front or from inside). Can the bearing be replaced with the centre still in the diff or does it need to come out for dissasembly???...and is there much in setting up the pinion bearing pressure or is it as tight as the pinion nut goes without rooting the anti crush tube?
2: How much oil in the diff is too much? I want / have to run more than the standard amount of diff oil now the pinion is pointed higher as the bearing I feel is running almost dry. What would happen if I ran too much oil? Just some blow back upo the breather pipe??
All help appreciated as I gotta fix it and if the diff has to come apart I will do it whilst I replace my bent axel.

As far as I know, there are two bearings on the pinion. The centre has to come out and crown wheel taken off th get the pinion out. As for tightening the nut on the flange, put the centre in the housing or a BIG vice and use a few nuts to hold it there. Make a bar with a plate on the end that will bolt onto the flange and rest on the ground or bench/wall to stop the flange from turning. Then do up the nut to the required torque. Which is a lot, in 13Nm increments till you get the backlash right...If needs be use the book to get the right figures....

hi pinion diffs have a oil slinger to get the oil to the pinion bearings. maybe look into one of these while the centre is out.
buy the gregory's or whatever book for your model of car. always handy to have heaps of information about the model and it will have the torque readings and 'how to's' for the diff.

Will try to find out about these oil slingers, thanks.
Problem is I need 2 manuals as I need 1 for the Surf and 1 for the diff as I think itis from an 84 or so and SASed into the Surf.

All the hilux diffs are the same except for ifs, the torque for the pinion nut is 193Nm and increases in 13Nm increments.
