well my cars pretty much at the stage where it needs paint. obvisously i cant do it, my dads away for work and yeh so no paint for my car. i can supply paint and spray guns and compressor and all that but need sum1 who can actually spray good.

can any random buy two pac?? i thought you couldnt use it unless ya had an oven anyway? id love to give painting a go but its the prep im most unsure of.......antt wrote:just go to the paint shop and get some 2 pak paint and ask the guy behind the counter for some pointers. 2 pak is pretty easy to use and apply, and gives a glossy appearance straight away with minimal coats

you would have to have rocks in your head to use anything other than 2 pack. why waste 20 years of paint development. people are scared of 2k for reasons i don't know. it dosent run if you spray lightly and let it tac for 15mins between coats. acrylic is shit especially on a 4x4. acrylic is so thin as its like 70%+ solvent and needs say 15 coats to match the thickness of 2 coats of 2 pack.
mattsluxtruck no offence but; how can anyone with insufficent skill to paint have any hope in hell of blocking acrylic without rubbing through! you can rub acrylick through with a rag and kitten number 2 if you are not careful.
when i get a minute i will do something up for the bible as this comes up quite often

for gods sake dont buy automotive paint. its too exxy and its too soft (imho) for a 4wd out bush all the time.
go to somewhere like a dulux trade centre (or wattyl or international, just look up industrial paints in the yellow pages or something) and ask about polyurethane. its 2pack, but its much much harder/stronger/wear resistant than 2pack car paint. and i personally think its easier to spray. for about half the price or less, how can you go wrong?
my mates hq sedan was done in polyurethane and it came up a treat, nice gloss off the gun, and 6mths later still looks as good as when i did it. all up he spent less than $400 on primer, sandpaper, paint, tape, the lot.

I just painted my Fj 40 with polyurethane 2 pac, was the easiest thing i ever did and 4L was less then 200 bucks from my local industrial paint supplier. I had very limited painting experience before then and basically took my time, preparation is the key to a good job i reckon. It was done just in my shed on a nice day, no wind etc. I have since then done a few mates 4by's with this type and it works a treat, good glossy finish and tuff as nails, (within reason) has been on my 4by now for 4 years and still looks a million bucks when clean. Acrylic is sh*t used it the other day and took heaps of coats to get an even finish, then still had to spent alot of time polishing it. Never again. Anyway that's my 2cents worth, and have fun.

Go it or blow it
some hints on prepping would include:
whack on some primer, sand it back with some finer paper (be sure to put a bit extra primer on wear areas like around doors, where you rest your arms on the window sill, places like that).
if youve primed it and you still see imperfections like where stonechips have occured, then youre too fussy and probably shouldnt be listening to me . if you are that fussy, give it more sandpaper action, wipe it all down again with prepsol/metho/whatever and hit it with the primer once more.
wait a day / week / as long as you can for the solvents to release from the primer, before painting the topcoat. the paintshop guy can tell you how long to wait. or read the tin at least.
ring the paint store you got the paint from if youre in doubt about anything. get a business card from a sales rep, so then you have a mobile number you can ring at 4pm on sunday arvo .
sand the whole primered vehicle with some finer paper, 240 or finer. dont get too worked up about 800 and 1000 grit and stuff. id try 240, if its a bit hardcore, go to 600 or something in between (im ghetto, 240 is fine for me).
wipe it all down again, and check that your masking tape job is still up to scratch.
paint the colour, starting from the bottom working up.
the best time to paint seems to be in the morning when theres less wind, unless you have the luxury of a lockable garage or similar (dont forget you need to breathe). ive done plenty in carports with tarps for walls, and wet-down gravel floors.
well, im sure theres pro painters on this board who can tear me a new one about my hints, but hey, at least if they do, we all learn a bit more. bring it awn!
- wash and dry the vehicle thoroughly before starting anything.
wipe down with wax and grease remover / prepsol / metho
use lots of masking tape and newspaper on everything you dont want sanded or painted. get 2 rolls of wide stuff and a roll of skinny stuff
if you have bog already, and its cracking, remove it all and do it again, or it will continue to look like crap
your bog-job is as good as your patience allows.
sand the existing paintwork with 180 or 240. something coarse, but not something so coarse that your kids / the neighbours kids nick it for their skateboards, youre just giving the undercoat something to grip onto.
if the paints flaking or falling off, sand the flaky stuff all off. obviously if it looks like its stuffed, it IS stuffed and you dont want it on there.

Going by the avatar this rig is allready in undercoat.
U got two options unless u know what undercoat was used as it may react with topcoat.
Or get some undercoat and topcoat. I have just started painting my 45 with PolyU 400 2k It's the sh1t. As long as you like sanding concrete as the undercoat goes real hard. The gloss comes up excellent as long as the less is more approach is used LESS-paint MORE-coats.
