resplining axles

Post by 83 lux »

Ok
On the weekend i busted a free wheeling hub on a soild axle lux
i am running 30 sline longs
When the internals of the hub busted i chewed the spline of the end of the long.

What i am looking at is that this is not a cheap axle and i want to keep it(as a spare)

What i need/want to do is respline the cv.
Now do i do this:
Do i rebuild the axle back up then respline it or
Do i get it respline as it is now and make a custom hub

and i will also need so one to do this

Can anyone help.
HOOLAY Wish i could buy boggers for my DH bike

How bad is the damage? are the splines completely stripped?

For rebuilding then resplining, talk to Zenith Engineering, they do a lot of this type of work.

You will need to find someone that does "Metal Spraying". Its a simple process on normal hardend steel. I am not sure on the process for Chromoly though!

If it turns out the only thing you can do is re-spline it and get a custom hub made up then get it resplined to suit an IFS Freewheeling Hub as it will bolt straight on to your Wheel hub but its only 27Spline from memory and is a smaller diameter. But obviously its not going to be as strong. It should still be stronger than a stock CV and axle though.

Have you called Bobby yet? He may be able to just supply you a Bell as he sells the Star and Cage as a replacement.

metal spraying wont cut the mustard for resplining, only good 4 seal diameters and sum bearing diameters, excluding needle rollers.

Yep. They do a lot of shaft/spline rebuilding (or at least used to).

So can you get discounts on machining work for me? And can you find out what spline broaches they have next time you are there?
