The Ashcroft Underdrive

Post by ashtrans »

Hi,

sorry if this comes across a bit commercial but I genuinely think this will be of interest to quite a few people.

Due to ongoing demand in the US and Europe we decided last December to make another batch of Underdrives. We are now in the final stages and time to make it public knowledge.

They have been designed to allow us to improve manufacture and make a larger batch size than before allowing us to reduce the costs to hold the final price down.

We are making 50 initially and aim to have them available from early July 05, we have had a lot of initial interest and I think these 50 will sell quite quick, if they do, we will make more but this will take a few months.

We have also developed a Crawler low ratio gear set for the LT230, this gives a 1.222 ratio high and a 5.95 low ratio.

More details on these two here :

http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.c...ategory_12.html

we will be adding more info and new photos shortly,

well done ....
I know these will be more popular than the last...
the underdrive is 1500 GBP and the low range gear set is 650 GBP...
so that is around $3700 aud plus shipping, gst and duty for the underdrive and around $1540 for the 80% reduction gears... also plus gst, shipping and duty...

good luck with these and i hope they become a production item....
now... who wants to buy my wife

My understanding of what you were doing Michael was that it has a doubler ie 2 low range ratios.
A 5.95:1 low range ratio would be too low for an auto IMO (at least for Victorian conditions). My maxidrive crawler which takes it down to about 4.6:1 (off the top of my head) is sometimes too low in the vic slope without being able to manually select a gear to take off in. Off course, if you were running a manual valve body in the auto then this would be different altogether.

BTW, its good to have some more options out there for Rovers, they should be some quality product given the reputation Ashcroft have.

What I wanted was the Std rover l/range and another low range 2.57-1 or similar.

Give the choice of either range or use both.

I can make the unit for mine using the jeep reduction for around 2.5-3 maybe less.
then I have to modify hand brake and use series type slightly smaller diam.

ashcroft will bolt straight on almost.

Fair enough, i assumedly (perhaps wrongly) that peoples interest would be in the crawler gears rather than the underdrive due to the price differential.

From reading the website, the downside of the crawler gears is having to use a 1.22 high range.

No issue to me I have 4.3 diffs

and with 35's and 1.192 high range car wil cruise perfect at 100-110.

I also agree that 80 % reduction on its own would be way to low. as are the 40% attimes.

IMO people should change diff ratios this would sole drive issues in both Low and high range.

crawer box/ underdrive bolts onto PTO.
Drive will go from out put shaft into Underdrive to T/case input gear then as per std lt230 operation.

You get either direct drive or a reduction of 2.56 aprox plus the option of using the Std Rover reduction 3.332.

so you basicly have 3 different low range options.

I understand the underdrive cannot be used with Ashcrofts own lower-low gears, but is it compatible with Maxi-drive's 30/40% lower gears?

Me too.

Looks promising. I am glad I am earning euros these days though, instead of the pacific peso.

Dave, If you are reading this, I will be over in the UK in mid September, will the crawler box be available then? And if so, could you PM me a price?
